How do you use 4.0 each day?

Perhaps all one can do is look up a verse or topic and proceed from there...or use the "newspaper" and let that guide you. The latter doesn't really turn my crank because topics are not connected, repetition of advertising and help topics, and the depth of the topics is somewhat lay-oriented.

So I wonder, is there another way you use 4.0 on a daily basis?

BTW, wouldn't it be great if there was a daily newspaper that was completely guided by the Lectionary?

How do you use 4.0 each day?

In Logos 3, I look at the devotional selections I've set up, check off the daily reading my wife and I have done, look over the Logos news and blog items to see if there is anything of interest, and then do a little bit of study for my weekly small group and some writing/speaking projects and read a bit in one or two books (non-bible). The nice thing is that it's organized to give me the choice of what I want to see when I want to see it. I haven't/can't yet set that up in Logos 4.

I have two problems that I've yet to overcome:

The L4 home page loads too slow. I have a high speed laptop, a high
speed DSL network connection and the homepage takes almost a minute to
load. Don't know why.

I wonder if Logos may have misjudged the market place with their "newspaper" look and feel to the home page. One reason I refuse to take the local print newspaper
is because the layout is too inefficient and the content is limited to what the
editors think I want, or should know. Most web formats allows me
quickly get at what I want to dig into. The L4 home page looks pretty,
but has a lot of stuff that I don't care about and not enough of what I
do and isn't organized in an efficient way. I've turned off some of the features where allowed, but that hasn't helped.

All this is just my experience so far. Perhaps it will change as Logos improves L4 or as I learn more
about it.

It would be nice if there were newspaper subscriptions. A few different ones that offered general study like there exists now and a few others that offered things more tailored. I mentioned the Lectionary focused newspaper. There are many other approaches.

I wonder though, if there are other approaches to L4 that users practice other than the newspaper.

I do not use Logos for core Bible Study, but as a tool to record my notes of Bible Study. Yes, you can study information from resources, but the ability to record what you learn as it relates to areas of the Word and para-Biblical information is very handy and a great ability of the software.

Once in a while, I may seek to understand relationships between words, contexts, people, places, events, etc..., but the core study materials I get is from a Pastor, teaching from the original languages, who is much more skilled and spiritually mature than I am.

I use Logos 4 for pretty much all Bible study. I use it to for my MCheyne's BIble reading plan. Carson's For the Love of God devotional helps guide me with this.

Then I dig into whatever passage I'm studying for teaching or for personal edification with Logos. Generally I will read the passage a number of times using a number of different translations and making use of the compare versions tool. Observations are recorded in note files. In Logos 3 I would outline the passage, in many cases using both a stick diagram and a block diagram. Pauline epistle passages would often use arcing. Currently a pen and paper are used for this until it reappears in Logos4.

Based on the observations, I begin to do pertinent words studies as necessary. Then using the passage guide, I begin to consult outside resource: Commentaries and journals first. Then as I'm thinking about the packaging of it and communication of it, I move to devotional commentaries and sermons (particularly spurgeon & piper). Notefiles record my work. I also tend to use scratch paper and a Bible open on my desk for this portion.

Also, a number of books that I read are available in Logos. Currently I'm reading Piper's Future Grace, Works of John Owen vol 1, Christ-Centered Preaching, and Revelation 20 and the Millenial Debate. I prefer to do this in Logos because of the links to BIblical verses, the ability to follow cross references, and the searchability. I highlight as I read and often make notes. I love the highlights because when I'm done with the book I can review the best-of's by using the "next highlight" navigational arrow to jump through the book from highlight to highlight.

I use Logos 4 for other random tasks, but this shows you a glimpse of my daily use. I'm generally using the program for between 1 and 6 hours a day.

I start my day using my prayer lists in L4, then I browse the home page and check out any articles of interest (I like the format of the home page). At work one of my 4 screens usually has my personal bible study layout loaded and I will reference it during the slow times, mostly light reading and skimming. Evenings are personal bible study the first part of the week, then focusing on the section that I am teaching starting Wednesday and I spend the rest of the week in Logos.

The only time I touch a paper bible is when I am teaching on Sundays. Other than that all my reading/studying happens in L4.

I don't use devotionals or lectionaries so those don't figure in to my schedule, and I am also working through a couple of books of interest.

Use L4 for 99% of all my studies, generally 6 hours daily. I do have resources set up just for reading under certain topics, i.e pastoral reading, pastoral ministry, prayer, devotionals, etc. and by certain studies that are ongoing i.e. Proverbs, Revelation, Homosexuality, Christology.

I also have access to DVDs from Master's Seminary of their courses (Theology, Pastoral Ministry, etc) and have found L4 very help when viewing these, I am able to follow the syllabus and make notes in L4 for further review and to keep current observations.Wish I had the syllabus itself as an L4 document, and the ability to place my notes within the resource itself.

And any other time I may just be relaxing and want to read. I have found it just plain wonderful to set my NASB on "reading view" lean back in my chair and just read (of course after I make the font much larger )

I use Logos4 for the content that is not in Logos3 (I realize most of it can be downloaded).

basically, I use Logos4 as a reader and use Logos3 for serious Bible study.

Someday, I hope to figure out how to get Logos4 to work like Logos3, if or when that is possible?

I love the highlights because when I'm done with the book I can review the best-of's by using the "next highlight" navigational arrow to jump through the book from highlight to highlight.

I have been experimenting with using Clippings instead of highlighting. It is similar, because you can demarcate what sections are important to you. But here are a few important advantages:

The main advantage is being able to record thoughts/reactions etc right with that clipping
I have a more concise and gathered view of my 'favorite' parts of the book. I can see several at once, bouncing my eyes back and forth between them.
If i want to access a favorite of those, it is much easier to access, then copy and paste--even my notes are there (this has been helpful when reading has influenced a sermon I am working on, or a lesson I am teaching)

I do wish it were easier to copy/paste clippings into Word or OneNote.

As for L4, I use it for sermon prep, using it generally in a way similar to Jacob's flow. My exact order and emphasis depends on the passage. I also use it for reading. Currently I have a "worship" layout with several resources I am working through and making clippings and notes. (Robert Webber has a few I am reading right now: Ancient Future Worship, to mention one.

I have been thinking of setting up my elementary aged girls with a layout of resources they might find fun and helpful to study, but I have not done that yet.

I also have a few of the English dictionaries/thesauruses when I do editing work for a freelance job.

Forgot to add that now with prayer lists back in Beta 4 I am working that into my morning routine. I'm grateful for it, as I find I am praying more diligently and consistently for others.

What I think I've learned here is that there isn't any sort of daily approach to L4 that I didn't know about already. Essentially, the newspaper thing doesn't row my boat but there isn't another way of doing that so just leave the software open to my study layout and...well, study.

I was really hoping there was something I was missing...a way of using the software that I just didn't grasp that would provide serendipitous opportunities to learn something new. Not that this doesn't happen in straight-ahead study but since the newspaper was part of what sold me on Logos, I've been holding out hope that there was something about it I just didn't comprehend. Not the case.

So, I will type in the search field each Monday morning what text I will be preaching on the following Sunday and pretty much leave that researched layout loaded for the week.

Thanks for that tip. I looked up how (F11) and gave it a try. I hadn't know that was possible.

I find that for reading, if there are much more than 10 words per line, my eyes get tired trying to keep my place as I read. There's word that we may get a multi-columned reading view. So until then I agree with Whyndell, you have to bump up the size, even on a small monitor.

Yep. I just leave it in the layout or float it and read it where the width is narrower and the eye can return to the next line more easily. Of course this can be accomplished with the big print too.

Since it is so slow to load (and if the index isn't perfect, it crashes Logos), I don't use the Home Page much; when I do, it's mostly to get ideas for areas of study I didn't have by other means.

My goal is to use Logos daily, and I flip between layouts (_Love the Layouts!_) as I shift between:

Reading through/studying a version of the Bible in a year
Doing the same for the Apocrypha over a 6 mo period
Prepping my SS lesson
Studying a commentary on a book of the Bible
And reading way too many other books (currently:
- Christian History Mag
- BB Warfield's The Plan of Salvation
- AW Tozer's Whatever Happened to Worship
- I never knew that was in the Bible
- A Concise History of Christian Thought
- You Can Understand the Bible Seminar
- AW Tozer's The Warfare of the Spirit)

I use highlighting quite a bit (nothing fancy; tend to use the yellow glow & Ctrl-K a lot to avoid window focus limitations of the Highlighting Tool), and I clip things I may want to remember into a "Notable Quotes" note. That is rapidly becoming unwieldy though.

I have become good friends with OneNote and Paint as I try to arrange my lesson plan/handouts for teaching SS. I don't use the handouts feature because it inevitable crashes my PC. I like the paragraph-style large wordfinds for handouts, but can't print them directly...that always reverts to the word list version.

I don't use the Beta because I only have a very short amount of time each workday to prosecute my goal (unless, like this week I get sick from overwork [:S]), and need the software to work/be quick about it--but I am looking forward to getting those improvements when Logos feels they are ready to be released upon us teaming masses [:D]

Logos helped me assuage my inner geek, and my walk with the Word has really multiplied; with V3 I was too busy fighting the GUI to keep a head of steam up/find it fun to chase rabbits.

I use Logos every day for virtually all of my Bible study. I use it for personal devotions and for sermon / Bible study preparation. I start with the the English text, move to the Greek or Hebrew and do inductive study. Then I check appropriate Bible dictionaries and commentaries for answers to questions that have arisen in my study.

I do use some books that I don't yet have on Logos - especially some NIVOT and NIVNT commentaries.

What an asset to have all these resources at my fingertips.
