BUG: Book of Esther fails Basic Search

See attached - I tried searching for any references to Esther in the Lectionary using <Esther> and it fails finding any of the yearly 1st Thursday of Lent entries. Note this Basic search for say, <Matthew> finds all entries to the scripture text within the book of Matthew.

I think you must use either Esther (with no brackets) or <Person Esther>.

Esther will find any ocurrence of this name. <Person Esther> will find any ocurrences where this person is referenced, even if not explicity named. For example, searching a Bible for <Person Esther> will include in the results Esther 1.9: "And the maiden pleased him..."

The <Esther> construct searches for any references to the book of Esther.

Don - I can reproduce what you are reporting and I am assuming it is some sort of tagging issue but I'm not sure.

The default datatype used for handling search queries differentiates between Esther and Greek Esther. You will either need to expand your query to include both: (<Esther>, <Greek Esther>)

or specify a Bible datatype that treats those references all as Esther: <BibleNAB Esther>

If you right click on one of the references in the Catholic Lectionary, you can do a search to determine which datatype to use:

Thanks Andrew, so I see now that I could search on something like <BibleNAB = Esther C:12>. BUt then I tried <BibleNAB = Esther> and I got 0 results. How would I search that lectionary resource for all references to any part of the book of Esther, not just verse C:12?

And I am still not sure I understand why I can do a search say on <Matthew> and get all scripture references to Matthew in the lectionary, but <Esther> does not work?

The "=" operator in your search tells it to only return results that exactly match that reference. Remove the "=", and you will get what you are looking for.

Regarding the differences between Matthew and Esther, welcome to the wonderful world of Bible Verse Maps [:P] (https://wiki.logos.com/Bible_Verse_Maps). Different Bibles define books of the Bible differently. The Catholic Lectionary makes use of the NAB Bible datatype, which defines all of Esther as one book. The default Bible search datatype separates the first part of Esther from the Additions to Esther (see the link above for exact details).

Is it be possible for a user to change which Bible search datatype is set as the default? If not (and I think it's not), could this ability be added to the software? As a Catholic Verbum customer, I want my searches of <Esther> to include all of what I consider to be the canonical book of Esther.

It's not currently possible, but it does seem to me like something that should be improved. I've created a case to track this request.

Don, what Bible do you have listed as your highest priority Bible? An what Bible do you have your lectionary set to? I ask because most of the time the verse mapping will handle this sort of discrepancy ... there are a few cases where I can break the system especially if I put the NJB in the mix but I really want to play with your priorities to see why it failed.

Thanks Don. In this case, I agree with you that the default should be Greek Esther as that is what is in the default Bible and would align to the behavior of Daniel. Unfortunately, Esther is the only book that presents the issue in this way i.e. some Bibles contain both Hebrew Esther and Greek Esther as separate, complete books. Compare Daniel where the additions may be separate books or additions or included in Daniel .... but you don't get two Daniels. Or Compare Jeremiah or Acts where Bibles do not even distinguish if they contain the long or the short form.
