RefTagger on Google Sites... can it work?

Does anyone know how to make reftagger work on Google sites?

I tried adding the script code manually to a page via the HTML editor but it wouldn't work (Google stripped the script). Then, I tried with a page template and that didn't work. Finally, I went to App Scripts and tried copying the script code there and it said there was an error in line 4.

This would be a HUGE blessing to have working on my Google sites.

I tried to get it to work on my site about 4 years ago, and gave up for some not remembered reason.  

I did mange to get it to work on the Google blog site though.  

If you get a better response, I will update my web site
