Afraid indexing fries my machine

Last night I had to rebuild my Logos index as it got corrupted. Indexing was really hard on the CPU. I'm on a MacBook Pro. The CPU run on 200-300% for the first 2 1/2 hours (up to about 70% of the indexing). With the inbuilt fan on full speed it was constantly at 75C/167F degrees. I'm in a hot climate (30C/86F room temperature) and had to put ice packs underneath it to help cooling it. I already lost a machine because of overheating about two years ago.

Do others have similar experiences? Or was there something wrong?

Indexing can have that affect on some machines. My laptop from c. 2005 would shut down unless I directed a household fan its way! Later laptops from 2010 & 2015 did not have this problem. I wouldn't expect it from today's more efficient CPUs unless there was a design issue or a clogged CPU fan.

Discussions on the apple forums would seem to suggest that your mac will power itself down rather than come to any harm in an overheat situation. In reality I've had problems with heat in a macbook pro before due to the graphics card solder melting. In my experience, Apple will fix that under warranty often even outside warranty though because it shouldn't be possible.

My experience is that if you can work in a hot room you can use the computer. But I can see that indexing is a heavy job for the CPU. There can be dust or insects inside in the computer the and they reduce the efficiency of the fan, I am not sure whether you can check that or is it just a closed box.

One individual put his inside the fridge for a day during the indexing period. It was an Atom computer during either Logos 4 or 5.

A very common problem with laptops is that the fan sucks in dust which then stops the processor from properly cooling. I would get someone to take a look inside, and make sure that's not the case. I have to do this with my laptops every 18 months or two years, and it makes a real difference in their performance and in how often the fan kicks it.

A Windows user had a similar experience which was resolved by lowering CPU speed during indexing - Hot Indexing - a quick search presents no similar method to control CPU speed in OS X.

An alternative, limiting the CPU usage of a process, may be helpful.
