Music at Startup Makes My Day

I know this is an extremely small matter, but I really enjoy the music at startup in the Windows version; kind of makes my day. I look forward to opening Logos for simply that reason. Any chance of hearing the same music or a mac"ified" version for v15? Anybody else love that soft & soothing piano intro? It inspires me to use my program more...

(Sorry, I know you MAC programmers already have a lot to deal with.)

On another note, I have been increasingly dependent on the MAC version as most of the functions available are sufficient for my uses (i.e. I haven't had to fire up Parallels to use the Window's version). Thanks for all your hard work, guys! Mac Programmers, I salute you! Wink

Funny you should mention that Carlin, because the music is one of the turn-offs for me in the Win version and I enjoy opening up Mac L4 for that very reason - I have turned the chime off in Win L4. It is there in the program settings, maybe just not activated yet by the great Mac dev team.

But like you, I am using the Mac version more and more.

L4 is a study tool. Do you expect a few well-chosen chords when you pick up a hammer or pull a concordance off the bookshelf?

In preference settings, the fifth option down is to turn off the sounds which I assume includes the opening music once that is implemented in the program.

Like some on this thread, I care nothing for the music, and it's embarrassing when it goes off in public. Software should be seen and not heard. It kind of reminds me of Windows 3.x that had to go "TA DA!" when it loaded. Windows still likes to sound an opening and closing little jingle, so maybe this is another Windows vs. Mac thing. If you like such startup sounds--deep down--you may be a Windows person... :-)

The devs have to start the app up constantly throughout the day. We have such a preference for our own sanity, if nothing else.

I don't use the start up chime either.... but I love a decent looking splash image. Anything like that on the way? Also, I'd love to have the app open in full screen...

What's the purpose of a splash screen? I know what program I'm opening. Note that MS Word for the Mac has a splash screen, but iWork Pages does not. At the very least, if there is a splash screen at all, the user ought to have the option of turning it off as it really serves no purpose.

So a lot of these Mac switchers may still be thinking in Windows. We'll have to break them of that.

For what it's worth, it would be great if we could have the ability to change the chime. Or maybe if we had chimes to choose from? I really liked the opening chime on the YouTube videos for Bible Study Magazine. They were clean and less...well, they spoke to me better than the current sound.

Just food for thought.

That's a system startup sound. Macs and PCs both have them. Very different from the OS starting up or application sounds.

Seriously, Macs are much quieter than Windows machines--all around.

Given Apple's penchant for insanely great, wonder what a robot would do ? perhaps a lively theological discussion based on prioritized Logos resources.

Over the years, Apple has changed Sad Mac startup sounds (not good to hear) - opposite from Logos.

Likewise would appreciate choice of sounds for Logos startup, including silence.

For many years, Mac OS and Windows have had options for customizing sounds associated with variety of actions. Another configuration option on both Mac and Windows is choice of colors - with variety of schemes.

A splash screen does more than just tell you what you are opening, it can display information about start-up processes like Singing In and Loading Recourses.

Sure, Pages doesn't have one because its simple word processing (which I use all the time, by the way). But an app like Photoshop CS4 has a very cool splash screen (even with a bit of semi-transparent text) that displays info.

Its mainly an aesthetics thing, I know, but I wouldn't say it has no purpose. At least no less purpose than a start up chime. A splash screen is just a visually creative way of displaying start up info and reminding you about how cool an app is even before you start using it.

Tony, please know that my discussion of this is mostly tongue in cheek. None of this is really a big deal to me.

But your distinction between Pages and Photoshop are perfect examples of Mac vs. Windows programs.

Yes, there was a time when Photoshop and other Adobe products had a larger following on the Mac than on Windows. In fact, I can remember a Windows user complaining about the fact that Illustrator didn't get updated as often on Windows as it did on the Mac. Times have indeed changed. All of the Adobe apps are Windows ports that get very little attention in regard to current Mac standards. This is seen in little details such as the Adobe apps wanting to take over the whole screen (very much a Windows thing) by stretching toolbars across the top of the screen even if it wastes space. There's no way to window the Photoshop workspace at all, in fact. And try hiding Photoshop by typing the standard Mac Command-H, which is the standard for just about every Mac program I know of. It won't do it. You have to type Command-Shift-H which is totally foreign. So a splash screen in Photoshop says little more to me than this is a Mac port that is still acting like a Windows program.

At the very least, I'd say don't let any Adobe program set the standard for true Mac applications. Adobe is seriously doing their own thing with very little attention to Mac conventions.

I don't want to flame the platform wars, but I was a Mac user before I was a Windows user. I had a Mac 128k. (I even used a Lisa, before the Mac!) And I've gotta say, application sounds, splash screens, etc. are native to the Mac, not Windows. The Mac was making cheesy sounds (and using cheesy icons -- sad-face Mac? bomb icon?) before there was a Windows. (And even then, it was silent. Most PC's didn't have sound cards until the mid 90's.) Even if Windows went overboard, we all know Microsoft doesn't innovate, right? The ideas came from the Mac -- along with the sounds.

I think Mac fans have to own this one... :-)

I study in coffee shops, etc. If I remember right, an earlier version of Logos would fire off "A Mighty Fortress." It was pretty annoying. (Not the hymn itself but the announcement to everyone within earshot that "a holy man is in the house!") And my laptop speakers weren't really designed to produce pipe organ in hi-fidelity. I had to mute my speakers every time the program was starting up.

Please make any start-up sounds optional.

It started out sorta as an inside joke, cause I'm sorta known as the "Libronix guy" at church. Then I became "famous for it": http://blog.logos.com/archives/2008/02/now_on_your_phone.html And now it's been my ring for so long, I don't think I'd pay attention if the phone rang with anything else. In a few years, with Logos 4 changing the sound, nobody will even know what it is.
