TIP of the day: Putting a search together: Old Testament quotations in the Passion Narratives

1. When I look at the cookbook for Bible searches, I see a search that appears to be exactly what I want ot-quote. Unfortunately, while the format tells me that this uses a search field, nothing tells me that the search field is limited to HCSB and numerous Greek New Testaments I discover this by running against all Bibles.
2. I can verify that the HCSB contains the search field by checking the information panel.
I then run the search with a wildcard. Remember that if you click on the cookbook search argument it will be placed in the search argument box. From there you need only to modify it to me your needs. In this case I replaced the word light with an asterisk.
3. One can also achieve the same results by using the first parameter in the Search statement - simply check the OT quotation box in the drop down menu. Note this option will appear only if the HCSB is included in the resources to be searched.
Again the results of the search, this time with a simple * as the search argument.
4. One can also approach the search from the perspective of the intertext label. From the Wiki:
Logos wiki said:Intertext
Intertext (Intertextuality) labels expose the data behind the interactive resource “New Testament Use of the Old Testament”.
- {Label Intertext WHERE [NOT] Source=~BibleReference1}
- {Label Intertext WHERE [NOT] Target=~BibleReference2}
- {Label Intertext WHERE [NOT] Relationship=~Citation | Quotation | Allusion | Echo}
- {Label Intertext WHERE [NOT] Corpus=~New Testament | ... |} —> not strictly needed as the only Corpus is the NT.
For example:
{Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Gen-Mal>} —> finds passages in the NT whose Source is the OT
{Label Intertext WHERE Target ~ <Mt-Rev>} —> finds passages in the OT that are used in the NT
{Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Gen-Deut> AND Relationship=Quotation} —> finds quotations in the NT that come from Gen-Deut.
{Speaker <Person Jesus>} WITHIN {Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Gen-Mal>} —> finds passages from the OT that were used by Jesus
{Speaker <Person Moses>} WITHIN {Label Intertext WHERE Target ~ <Mt-Jn>} —> finds OT passages spoken by Moses that were used in the Gospels
{Speaker <Person Moses>} WITHIN {Label Intertext} —> finds Intertext passages in both OT & NT where the speaker is Moses
5. Here I want a WHERE statement that matches any Old Testament reference i.e. Source ~ <Gen-Mal>. Note that this gets me 17 verses rather than the 15 verses I was getting previously.
6. Here I expand the search to include the entire ecumenical canon of the NRSV which adds one additional verse.
7. With a bit of facet selection and manual review one may select your results directly from the New Testament User of the Old Testament interactive.
8. The resource Jones, David A. /Old Testament Quotations and Allusions in the New Testament/. Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software, 2009. is another way one can find the necessary information. Here the search argument is a simple list of the references for the Passion narratives.
9. Morris Proctor had a recent blog on searching How to Quickly Move through Search Hits in Logos that is relevant to this discussion. An excerpt:
[quote]
After executing a Basic Search, you may find yourself with a lot of results from one resource. For example, imagine studying Colossians 1:19 where you come across the phrase fullness of God. So you decide to investigate this phrase throughout your whole library. Here’s a little tip to help you quickly move through the search result you uncover:
- Click the Search icon in the upper left of the program to open the Search panel
- Select Basic as the search type (A)
- Select All Resources from the range to search drop down list (B)
- Type a search query in the Find box such as “fullness of God” (C)
- Press the Enter key to generate the search results (D)
- Select Resource to arrange the results according to the books in which they were found (E)
- Click the arrow next to a resource such as The Bible Exposition Commentary to display results from that book (F)
- Notice in The Bible Exposition Commentary the phrase appears 8 times over the course of 4 articles, but the Search panel doesn’t display all 8 results (G)
- Click the first search result in the resource to open the book right to the hit (H)
- Choose the panel menu on the open resource (I)
- Select Show locator bar (J)
- Select Search Result from the drop down list on the Locator bar (K)
- Use the Previous / Next arrows (up / down) on the Locator bar to move through the search hits in this resource (L)
This simple trick works with any resource in your library!

By the way, I love it when questions like this comes to the forums. It helps us think about different ways of using Logos that we may not have thought about before. Like the one above. I thought about your question and tried this (using the context menu from a quotation as starting point to see what I could search). I learned something out of it.
Fr Devin Roza said:Nice find, Francis. Comparing this and the LiteraryType search, it looks like the best way to search for OT Quotes in the NT is actually this:
[quote]{Section <LiteraryTyping Quotation, Old Testament>} OR {Section <Culture Prophetic fulfillment>}
Neither list is complete, but together they probably get about everything (for example, the OT Quotes Literary Type is strangely missing the OT quotes from Mt 1-2... but these are in the Prophetic Fulfillment Section!)
Adapting this to the question on another post about when does Jesus quote the OT, here would be the search:
[quote]{Speaker <Person Jesus>} WITHIN ({Section <LiteraryTyping Quotation, Old Testament>}, {Section <Culture Prophetic fulfillment>})

10. And a forum post on limiting it to the Words of Christ:
Fredc said:One additional suggestion:
You can create a passage list of all the words of Christ. To do this do the following:
- Open a search window and select "Bible"
- Select you favorite bible that is tagged to search for the "Words of Christ"
- Type * in the search pane to initiate a wild card search of all the words of Christ (keep in mind that the wild card search function in L4 is very slow and it may take a while to return the results. On my machine it took a little over 700 seconds; so almost 12 minutes)
- Then create a passage list from those results
Once this passage list is created, you can create a passage list of all the OT quotes in the gospels from a resource like "Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament"
- To create this list simply open the resource and select everything from Matthew - John with your cursor.
- Then open a new passage list and click add
- Choose add from selected text
- L4 will add all of the OT passages that are quoted combined with all of the NT passages where they are quoted
Once this is done select merge toward the top of the passage list pane
- Select the Words of Christ list you generated above and choose Intersection
The result will be a passage list that shows you all of the OT passages that were quoted by Christ.

Thanks, MJ. Sorry to resurrect such an old post, but I was searching for this very topic, found it helpful, and wanted to say thanks.
