What are your favourite note label types?

I do not use note labels because I cannot think of a use I can have for it at present. I thought it would help me and others explore the possibilities if those who use them regularly would share examples of the type of labels they apply to their notes. I am looking for the kind you use a lot or find particularly useful, not the less used or inconclusive experiment type.

Looking forward to reading and learning from others' examples.

My biggest use is expanding Logos coding:

The most useful but least used is an expansion of the Logos labels ... they keep indicating that they are doing something on hymns so I don't want to "get it wrong" yet I've been waiting years not months.

One that is being built up slowly that I suspect Logos may at some time supplant but I've heard no rumors so I'm going for it

Then there is this one built in long standing annoyance at the <impolite word> and <word for the accuracy-challenged> 10 Commandment interactive. This one was suggested by Eli ... but I get so annoyed using it as the order of the attributes is randomized when viewing or adding ...

I also have one adding some categories to the 613 Mitzvot (commands of God) which I've "mislaid" at the moment.

And I have a work in progress for Bible study questions - reference, question type ...

Thanks, MJ, for your response. I am unclear whether the examples you provided are specifically notes labels (as opposed to resource labels). If they are, can you explain a bit more to what kind of notes you attach what kind of labels? The difficulty, as I see it, is not with knowing what kind of uses labels can have in resources, but more how to use them profitably in connection with annotations *(the "Add Label" drop-down in the top right corner of notes).

Okay, I think I understand you ...

I can create a label, modify the content of the note, modify the label (upper right)... and have 1 entry in the Notes Document
I can create a note, add a label (upper right), modify note/label ... and have 1 entry in the Notes Document
I can create a label, create a note ... and have 2 entries in the Notes Document

The label is the same in its appearance in the note file, mouse over, Search ... I don't think that there is a notes label separate from a resource label, I think that there is simply a label which we can attach via a note file entry to anything we can attach a note to ... or leave unattached.

As I understand it -- but I am not confident of this -- note labels are not necessarily attached to a visual as resource labels are, otherwise they work the same. My query remains however: I am not asking about how labels work in notes, but what useful applications people have found for using labels within annotation files.

Okay, somewhere I am failing to understand you. I don't think of notes as different if they are attached to a resource location, a lemma or freestanding. Labels are simply a subset of notes (highlights being the other subset of notes). Which is what I tried to convey in my previous post.

If you take my hymn label, it doesn't matter if the hymn to which I attach the label is in a resource or in a Notes Document or is represented by a URL (not a live link if in the label/ a live link if in a Note). It is still simply a Hymn label.

Perhaps this will make it clear:

A Notes document contains Notes which

contains an optional note icon [traditional note]
contains zero or more attachment points
contains an optional note title [traditional note]
contains optional note content [traditional note]
contains optional data required to apply highlighting [traditional highlight]
contains optional Label type and attribute (s) data [traditional label]

Any differences are simply in what data is or is not present.

Let me illustrate what I am looking for in my query and hopefully it will be clearer. When I take one of the examples you mentioned above -- figure of speech, Bible outline, personal letter, sermon -- I can see readily how I may use these in resources. But would I label a note as figure of speech or Bible outline? Probably not and it would seem to me a more queer use of such labels. Possibly one who writes sermons and letters in annotation files might have use for using the sermon and personal letter labels to classify them further, but even that seem to be a use of notes that may not be that common. Or to use the example used in the training video, it is easy to see why one may label laws in the Torah according to attributes, but it is much less obvious that a note on any of laws should be, for instance, labelled the same way (e.g., casuistic law related to the 7th commandment).

I would think that most users tend to use notes to comment on passages in the Bible, to annotate books/articles they read, or to create topical entries or class notes. Except for users that put everything in one annotation file, notes are already categorized by file (e.g., personal letters note file) to which tags can be added (e.g., recipient, special occasion) and they are already automatically dated.

I understand the theory of using labels in notes: my problem is that I cannot think of a specific application that would be really useful to me. This is what I am fishing for: ideas that other users have come up with and that have proved really useful to them.

MJ, do you label your notes? If so, can you provide a concrete example that relates a specific type of notes to specific labels? Remember, I am not looking for others to start imagining ideas off the cuff; I am looking for descriptions of what has already been beneficially implemented.

Francis, I don't think anybody is labeling their notes. You would tag your notes but not label them. If you add a label to an existing note, you are not putting the label on the note as such. You are putting it on the resource that you attached the note to, to the same attachment point so to speak.

If you search for that label, you will come up with both though, the references in the resource and the notes in the note documents. So I guess it could be used to label your notes, but you have to be aware that you also label the resource (if it has an attachment point).

Would be interesting to hear, if there is anybody actually doing this, and for what reason.

Fiddling around, I have found one application for it (I think someone was actually asking about this a while back): use notes to annotate labels themselves. It goes as follows:

I select a piece of text in a resource, I create a note based on the selection, I type notes explaining whatever I want in relation to the label. Then, as I encounter other passages I want to label in the same way, I use the add attachment points to do that (as opposed to palette based labels applied as highlighting). The new attachment points will show the same note with whatever it contains and reflect the visual formatting of the note (type of icon, colour) but these labels do not have the same visual options as those created in highlighting nor can use a pre-existing label (as far as I can tell) when adding a label to a note.

This means that one can create a note file dedicated to labels, for instance, if it is important for a certain class of labels to be annotated.

Obviously, FL had an idea in mind when they created the feature. It would be interesting to hear from them what they thought it would be used for.

I gave a concrete example - when I use a note to contain a hymn text. I often use notes to contain "finds" from blogs and websites - hymns, lectionary commentaries, examples of horrific logic etc. so there is a continuity between the content of my notes and the content of my resources. I only use PB's for "large" finds.

I agree with Schumitinu that for notes as annotations tags are the usual way to go. But I think of notes more like a card file - quotes, resources references, questions, ideas, paraphrases .... and I think of capture hymn texts, lectionary commentary etc. as quotes.
