Greek Audio Addins on Logos 4 - Web Pages Have Me Confused

I'm new to Logos (just purchased the Original Languages Library), and
I'm trying to determine if either of the Greek Audio addins
work with Logos 4.

1. The Greek Audio New Testament page says
there is either a 3.0 Download or a 3.0 CD available. Right underneath
that it has the standard text box that says 4.0 users have to choose the
download option. Since most of the other addins provide a "Download"
option instead of a "3.0 Download" option, is the "3.0" significant or just a typo?

has the note: "NOTE: This addin is currently available only for
Libronix 3.0 on the Windows platform. " There is also the standard box that tells 4.0 users to use the Download option.

If you put the two web pages together, it seems to imply that Greek audio addins need some kind of Libronix 3.0 support. The forums indicate that other users have both of these working in Logos 4, but it also appears that they upgraded from Logos 3. The question I have is will these work with a clean install of Logos 4 or do I need some kind of backward compatibility sauce?

If they will work (which I think is the case), then the web pages could use a little maintenance. Smile

2. This product is purely for L3. To enable Pronunciations of individual words on L4 you must have, or upgrade to, Scholar's library or above (see http://www.logos.com/comparison)

The Greek Audio NT works fine for me in L4 and I didn't have to get it working in L3 first. I did have to run the update script provided on the product website, though, in order to get it to work after it downloaded to my machine: see where it says "If you purchase the download, you will need to install the Greek Audio NT AutoUpdate to complete the installation of the Greek Audio New Testament."

I don't have the other addin, but it looks like it is indeed one of the old L3 style addins which will not work in L4.

Yes, the web pages are in some cases out-of-date. There are literally thousands of them to update, and this is a manual process. Logos folks have been fixing them as fast as they can, but it will take time to get to them all. If you see specific issues like this, feel free to email feedback@logos.com. They are also planning a massive overhaul of the website which will probably make issues like this moot. But in the meantime, they are trying to clean up known problems.

I thought the only difference between the various library levels was the addins included, not some basic functionality in the Logos engine itself. Or is there a hidden L4 pronunciation addin that is included in Scholar's and above, but not available for anything below? I saw a "Pronunciation Tools" item in the comparison list, but I couldn't find an explanation of it anywhere.

Which version?

If you're using Logos Bible Software 4, you must choose the DOWNLOAD option. The 3.0 CD-ROM or DVD-ROM requires version 3 of the Libronix Digital Library System.

In Logos 3, they used "addins" to add more functionality to the program. In L4, the terminology "addin" has all but disappeared, except as a holdover from L3 days. If you look at the "Addins" advertised on the Logos website, they are all, with one exception (Greek Audio New Testament) these L3-style addins that add more functionality to the free basic engine. You used to have to pay extra to get the extra functionality. You still do, but the way they have implemented these distinctions in L4 is to have additional functionality built in to higher base packages that isn't present in the lower ones. You can no longer buy these features as a la carte "addins" to add to a lower base product the way you could in L3.

None of those old L3 addins will work in L4 (except Greek Audio New Testament). Some of them are not even re-implemented yet in any base package of L4 (e.g., Personal Book Builder, Sentence Diagramming).

If you look at the Comparison Chart for L4 base packages, and scroll down to the section labeled "Features and Databases" you will see what features are available only in higher packages.

The Pronunciation Tool that you're seeing mentioned there is accessible only in Scholar's and above, and it's on the Tools menu:

It opens up this panel on the right side:

You can select which pronunciation to use (Modern Greek or Erasmian) and click on any word in the list to hear its pronunciation (assuming you have your sound card and speakers set up and functioning properly).

You can use the Find box to find words by typing in the English transliteration, as follows:

If you click the info icon (the i with a circle around it near the upper right), you'll get an explanatory pronunciation table for whichever type of Greek you'd selected:

So the Greek Pronunciation Addin with Erasmian and Modern Data Sets is the Logos 3 version of this feature. Not only will it not work in L4, but you don't need it because if you've got Scholar's or above you already have it. If you've got something below Scholar's, this will not help you. The only way to get the feature is to upgrade to Scholar's.

Hope I've covered all the bases (and then some). [:)] And thanks for inspiring me to do a bit of research to find out what you were talking about, so I could give you (and perhaps future questioners) a better answer.

Maybe I'm wrong about this; maybe people with Original Languages or below can upgrade one addin at a time with the L3 addins, but I strongly doubt it. I think it's more likely that the web page is in error. They had so many of them to update when L4 shipped that they could easily have goofed on this one.

I agree with James that "the web pages could use a little maintenance"! The page states it is for (Windows) Libronix 3 only then confusingly added the standard L4 download message.

However, I'm confused that you had to download the Libronix Greek Audio NT AutoUpdate to get the audio book to work in L4!?

Thank you Rosie for taking the time to explain. This gives me a much clearer picture of the Logos 3 and 4 packaging models and my options.[Y] I didn't understand the difference between a function "addin" and a data resource such as Calvin's Commentaries. The distinction is clear now, and particularly important to consider when choosing a Logos 4 base library.

There is also a Scholar's library, which describes the data/books included. The platform can't be extended, but the library can. Both ideas are packaged into the actual "Scholar's Library." Maybe? I'm a little disappointed since I chose the Original Languages library thinking that I could buy the Greek Pronunciation "Addin" later. But as long as the Greek Audio New Testament works I can get the pronunciation help I was looking for. (It does seem strange to specifically/permanently exclude the Greek Pronunciation function from the "Original Languages" library. Maybe I can lobby to get it pulled above the cutoff line for that library.)

Now let me go take a closer look at that "Features and Databases" section... [8-|]

I'm not used to dealing with customer-oriented companies. I just checked my personal upgrade page, and it seems I can upgrade to the Scholar's library for essentially the difference in price between it and my current library. I was prepared for an expectation failure.

So if you make a mistake and get the wrong library, you aren't going to lose money to upgrade. Nice.
