Logos Resource Recommendation ICO Alcohol and the Christian

Good Evening,

I am writing a paper on alcohol in the life of the Christian. I have all my standard Bible dictionaries, Dictionary of Scripture and Ethics, and picked up a book called Bible Wines (Patton). Anything else out there, besides the Word, that you would recommend? Just trying to take a fair look at the issue. Thank you in advance.

Hi Jan

This seems like it could be a very big area to cover and different groups of people will have different views. Have you worked out exactly what the paper is going to be about yet. I think if you haven't it would be good to try and scope it out and then work out what you want to say. Just thinking out loud topics could be when is it okay to drink or when isn't it. What biblical conflicts are there. For instance the bible doesn't seem to prohibit drinking but it would definitely prohibit drunkenness and warns against alcoholism. Even if individuals can drink safely themselves the bible indicates indirectly that they shouldn't if their actions will cause other people difficulty etc. It is a big big topic.

I seem to recall a reading list of alcohol as well so it may be worth having a look at the read lists to see if it is still about - it may give you extra clues :-)

Thank you everybody. I have not chosen a particular direction at this point, just trying to get more education for my own benefit. I was brought up in a Southern Baptist/Independent Baptist tradition so I am already hardwired a certain way. I would like to take a more balanced look at the usage of alcohol in the life of the believer from both perspectives. The author of Biblical Wines has a very clear agenda and his argument demonstrates that. I have been able to study the Hebrew and Greek words using what I already have, I have a good idea about winemaking in early antiquity from my dictionaries. I just did not know if there was a "perspectives" or some other book out there. Thank you again, have a good weekend.

I would think there would be a great many articles in the journals. My search reveals about 3000 hits, a bunch in Journal of Biblical Counseling. I'd start there and then move to primary sources as they are quoted.
