Looking for a theological term

I listened to a lecture some time ago on an Old Testament survey.  There was a definition of a phrase given that means all inclusive.  For example "heaven and earth" means everything in between.  I think it has something to do with listing two opposites to include everything.  The phrase was something like complete by contrast.  That is not it but something like it.  Can anyone tell me what that phase was.

My best guess (which might be terrible) is that the word might be synecdoche?

According to google it's "a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa, as in England lost by six wickets (meaning ‘ the English cricket team’)."

EDIT: I'm almost positive that I'm wrong, and hoped to delete the post straight away, but no luck. Oops.
