This functionality has been added in L4; I think as of 4.0b (which is still in beta testing) so you might not have it yet. But when 4.0b ships you will be able to save the current Layout and overwrite the previously saved one of the same name, by right-clicking on the Layout in question in the Layouts menu, and choosing "Update to current snapshot."

It works in the current Mac release as well, so it is coming and works great :-)
