Sounds good except I rarely show the book icon so it would disable the function for me ... which I would not like. And when I have expanded a field such as subject to be able to see the longest entry on the page, often mouse over is the only way to access the title without scrolling.

On the other hand, I do understand the problem this request is trying to address and it is well worth spending time identifying an alternative that works for everyone.

Not strictly necessary as a popup will show the complete value without having to expand the field. So you should be able to have a field width that accommodates complete and incomplete values together with an adjacent field that will show the title popup (in Windows).
