One of our professors at GCTS regularly assigns a word study on πηλος in the context of John 9:6 ff. (the story of Jesus healing the blind man by making mud from spit and dirt).
In using the Bible Word Study Guide, it would be helpful for students to be able to go to the Septuagint Translation section and then be able to "click" on the various Hebrew reflexes to initiate Hebrew Bible Word Study Guides on all Hebrew resources a collection installed. However, it seems the disambiguation of triconsonantal words can 'break' the process.
"Textual Search" hits for different Hebrew reflexes of πηλος:
- BWS on טִיט HB 13/DSS 7
- BSW on עָפָר HB 110/DSS 96
- BSW on חֹ֫מֶר HB 17/DSS 0
In the third example, there are no instances of חֹ֫מֶר in the DSS (using the Qumran Sectarian Manuscripts).
However, if one performs a morph search in the QSM using h:hmr, the suggested lemma search is lemma:חֵמָר, and it yields 29 results.
Because I am a librarian and I've assisted hundreds of students over the years with this particular word study, I know to look in the DSS for instances of the triconsonantal word 'חמר' using either a print concordance or other software. However, for a student new to the DSS and Logos, etc., there would be no "cue" that would guide them to searching further.
So, here are my questions:
- Is there a way of setting defaults so that the BWS allow for some 'ambiguity' in vowel pointing between the various tagging schemes of the HB and QSM?
- Could something be added that would allow for this kind of ambiguation? (basically performing a morph search without vowel-pointing being taken into consideration)?
