Error?

I have Tom Constable's Notes open in two layouts--one for sermons, one for a Bible study. They're focused on two different Scriptures.

When I save the sermon layout, the "open" location for this resource is overwriting the location in the other layout.

The same issue is happening with two resources in the NICOT/NICOT. When I save the sermon layout, & then open the bible study layout, the wrong resource is open. Saving the sermon layout appears to have overwritten the Bible study layout.

For the way I'm trying to use the layouts, this is irritating. Is this how the s/w is designed?

If not a layout, what SHOULD I be using to ensure that all resources open to the correct location?

Hi Dave,

I have named layouts for each layout. Each has many resources open that I may use during the study time. Each is tailored for what I'm studying. Constable's notes is a (largish) one-Logos-volume commentary that I use as a quick reference for textual/interpretive issues that I may want to check out in more detail, elsewhere. At the end of each study time (John for sermons, Romans for the Bible study), I save the layout I'm in as a way to help remember where I was for next week. The study cycle for a sermon (John) is one week, changed on Sunday afternoon to the next Sunday's passage. The study cycle for Romans is also one week, changed after the Tuesday class to help me remember where to study & open the books for the following week.

So I notice if Constable's Notes opens to Romans after opening the Sermon named layout, when it should be open to John. And I notice when the Bible study named layout opens Constable's Notes to John, when it should be Romans.

Likewise, I have the NICNT volumes on John & Romans, so when the wrong one opens in the named layout that's studying the other, it's equally obvious.

Does that help? Do you still want screenshots? (I'll have to replicate the Bible study layout, since we finished Romans & went on to Habakkuk after I wrote.)

Are you saving using "Update active" after you change the passage, and does that layout show the appropriate name in the title bar when you save?

Yes, Dave. I'm saving using an update active button on my toolbar, & since I'm USING the resource each time, yes it shows the appropriate name in the title bar. I LEAVE it open to the correct place / book. But it's been opening in the last saved place rather than in the place I last saved it in the layout previously saved.

Well, well, well. Today, after refusing to update the Bible study layout at all the 1st time I tried it (it opened to John; I updated it to Habakkuk 3; it reopened to John), it's now working correctly. I have no idea what happened.

Hi Dave,

Although I don't remember checking, the layouts are so dissimilar visually that it's really hard to mistake which one I'm working in. (I don't keep the lectionary open when working on Bible studies, for just one of many examples. Nor do I keep notes files open for the sermon layout. Yet in the Bible study layout, I'm always using a note file for highlights & another for study notes. And the sermon layout has 4 panels open, where the Bible study layout has only 2.)

I went ahead & took pictures... After SAVING the Bible Study Layout yesterday & having it work CORRECTLY, it's wrong again today.

Here are pictures that show how different the layouts are (I can't mistake them), and showing all the panels (in front of the main panel). Here's the sermon layout. In it, everything is open to John 13:31-35. In both layouts, the grayed button (7th to right of Command Window) executes the Update Active Layout command.

And here's the Bible study layout, which has reverted in the NIV(84) on the right back to John 10:22-29, though it came up yesterday as Habakkuk 3. (I haven't opened the Bible Study layout since. I'm mistaken that it was the same as the Sermon layout. John 10:22-30 was the passage I preached last Sunday. That's where it appears to have gotten stuck.

This is just too weird! I don't have more time to play with it, so I'm going back to work. Any suggestions? Perhaps delete & re-establish the Bible Study Layout before changing layouts? Perhaps re-download Constable's notes? other?

I'm stumped, especially since problems don't seem to be limited to the one resource or the one layout. (Serial resources John & Romans were also acting goofy in the two layouts.)

I'm confused. You go back to work on '(sermon)', save it at Hab 3 then opened the Sermon layout. It seems you went back to work on the Bible Study layout, saved that and opened the sermon layout before reopening the Bible Study layout?

If TCENB is Constable, I note it is on a B linkset whilst NIV is on A linkset. What else is on the B linkset?

I'd look at the linksets of all resources in both layouts to see if that is what you want e.g. if you change the reference on a resource in B linkset, all the other resources change to that reference, including any in a floating window. If you remove the linkset on TCENB does that affect what you are observing?

Hi Dave,

"Sermon" layout = "ASermon". Link set A controls its Bibles, serial commentaries, Hebrew, & Greek language resources. Link set B controls MPG & MEG. Link set C is controlled by the Bible I use as the target for hot links to scripture passages. Link set C is used for English dictionaries. Link set D is used for Bible dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc. Link set F is used for lexicons. I have a number of other translations open for link set A & for B. NIV (84) seems to work normally & saves the location of each link set. But there is ONLY one instance of the resource Tom Constable's Expository Notes on the Bible (TCENB). For years, the link sets have functioned as I expected.

"Bible study" layout = "Faith Bible Study". (I have several Bible study layouts that are essentially clones of one another, differing only by the Bible book they focus on & the associated NT/OT language & commentaries. General layout is the same. Link set A is controlled by the Scripture we're projecting on the wall during the study. Link set B is for associated commentaries (Constable & others), which can't be allowed to change with scrolling of the Bible as we read it out loud. So its reference is changed manually, verse by verse as we want to check something. Link set C is Bible dictionaries / encyclopedias. Link set F is BDB & HALOT. Once I get everything open to the right passage (after correcting initial loading of Link set B in the layout), all the link sets appear to be working correctly.

For the moment, ASermon appears to be working correctly. To debug Faith Bible Study, here's what I've tried (I ran out of time):

Saved layout under a new name, deleted the layout, & renamed new saved layout to Faith Bible Study.
Changed all 3 resources sharing the link set B to No Link. Changed them back to link set B. They function together correctly, other than where they open initially. Whereas before, only TCENB opened incorrectly, they're now all attempting to open to the John 10:22-29 passage.
Tried repeatedly opening Faith Bible Study WITHOUT going to ASermon. Opened as expected.
Tried repeatedly opening Faith Bible Study FOLLOWED BY opening ASermon. Each time I opened ASermon & then went back to Faith Bible study, TCENB was open to the John 10:22-29 passage. I checked all my other layouts. None uses that passage, now. ASermon did back in March, but not since. That's when my problems started.

I'm mystified....

Remove instances of the FBS layout except for the latest and see if that changes anything.

Otherwise, build a new layout similar to the FBS layout. Slowly increase the number of bibles and commentaries from two each side and start with only the shortcut for "Update active layout". Add the Highlighting window last.
