Does anyone have any links to sources for, or instructions on how to make, the little bitty icons that can be used in the highlighting tool?

Unfortunately, that assumes you have an image to start with.
I'm betting the best tool for creating these would be something for the iPad...I just don't know what it is. A link to a web page with lots of them would be helpful...the ones I can find don't quite do the trick.
I'm aware of quite a number of docs in the Faithlife pages, but can't find exactly what I want there.

The best tool for creating them would be Adobe Illustrator. In your case, it might be best to find ones already made. Unfortunately, that means hunting for them.

Goto your Documents and instead of your Name choose All Users and Copy all the Pallets.

Logos Visual Filters has "ICONIC SYMBOLS - TRANSLUCENT" palette:
Translucent or transparent GIF icon images can be assigned color in a highlighting style.
Free icons => http://www.freeiconsweb.com/free-icons (with "links" for premium sets)
Free images => http://www.gif-favicon.com/ has icon size, which is usable for highlighting style.

where can I find this Logos Palette?
Well, I have used this product for years. But, it is not a free software package. It is powerful and not hard to use. You can make almost any size from any image or draw your own... But, with so many free options out there that are pretty good, you may not want to go this route.
