Minimum requirements to run Logos 6...WITHOUT any lag.

Hey all, as per title.

I know what the minimum specs are for the software to run, but at 2Gb Ram...it will be slightly unbearable to actually use.

At 2.7Ghz i5 with 8Gb Ram, and an SSD clocked at 500Mbps both read and write, I still get lag when doing mundane tasks such as choosing a verse, or a book, never mind indexing. This is on Win 10.

The question can also be for Mac users, as I am trying to find out which is the better OS for this at the minimum specs. I cannot update my CPU and RAM on my laptop, so it would be a new one. Hence the option top go to Mac...

Any help would be appreciated.

That ought to be good enough spec to achieve very little lag — although as we're now in the sixth generation of i5 it might help to be more specific.

What sort of delay are we talking about here? With that spec, I would expect a resource to open in about 0.5s.

It's an Ivy, so it is a bit long in the tooth.

Startup is 30 seconds plus, indexing is about another 20-30 seconds (I have about 30 resources, all free. I paid for one set of commentaries for the book of Genesis, so there is nothing to really index).

Opening up a verse is about 4-5 seconds from home page. Power lookup on a singular word is roughly the same. Visual copy on two words is over 10 seconds long.

It's not crazy long, but the lag is still annoying. Hence the want for something that is, as you presume, 0.5sec or so. I understand that a Hex core CPU with 32Gigs Ram would be ideal, but I am requesting the bare-bones minimum.

I guess we all have our own definitions of what lag is acceptable. I have a low end laptop, and startup to home page is a bit over 2 minutes. But since I don't do it that much, that is not much of a problem.

Opening up a verse just now was six seconds from when I typed the verse in the "Go box" to when it was displayed in my ESV. Power lookup on a Hebrew lemma was less than a second. Visual copy on a three word phrase was 5 sec. All these can get faster if they are cached, or slower if it is to a complex desktop within Logos.

And this is on a 4 GB i3 with stock hard drive (5k rpm I think) and almost 8k resources. I would have though that your much higher end machine with a much smaller library would have much better performance. That said, Logos historically has been a bit slower than its competitors. I for one don't mind this because Logos has the resources I am interested in and is generally much faster than using them in print.

The multi-second times you describe for events before this could be OK, but you are not specific enough. And "lag" usually refers to an event that you reasonably expect to happen instantaneously e.g. 0.1s or less for a keystroke to register on screen, or opening a resource panel in a layout.

You may want something better than 0.5s to open a resource panel from Library or layout but is 1 - 2s really that bad (is it "crazy long")?

I have a recent 2.4 GHz i7-5500U processor with 5400 rpm HDD and 8 GB RAM and event times are similar to what you describe, with resource lags less than 1s (when I can't complete saying "zero zero one"!).

You should upgrade to something better in the next 12 months or so, but an SSD and more than 8 GB RAM isn't a guarantee of better performance in Logos except for indexing and some searches.

I have a MacBook Pro Retina, early 2015, with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB 1867 MHz DDR3 Ram and a 128GB SD drive, of which I have no clue about the read/write speeds. It's also got the Intel Iris Graphics 6100 with 1536 MB. And I have little to no lag when doing most everything on Logos.

EDIT:

I used to use Logos on a 2009 MacBook Pro, non-retina, with an intel core duo processor, not an iAnything processor. I had upgraded it to 8GB ram and a 240GB SSD drive, and Logos ran relatively well. Not as fast as my new MacBook Pro, however, it wasn't nearly as slow as what you're talking about.
