I was just wondering if new or updated resources automatically change the contents of a collection? Or do collections remain "locked" until edited?
If you created your collectionin a dynamic way, using rules instead of dragging books one-by-one into the collection, then yes, new/updated resources should automatically become part of your collection if they fall into the parameters that the rule laid out. Unfortunately this can also mean some items would disappear from your collections if you had created the collections using metadata which was inaccurate and you'd worked around the inaccuracy in how you defined the collection.
If you dragged books into the collection, those should remain there even when the resources get updated. I haven't personally tried it because I haven't got any such collections, at least not any including resources that I know for sure have been updated since I created the collection.
Thanks Rosie.

They do. You should check them occasionally because a metadata change (type:, subject: etc.) may allow you to remove them and could have put them into another dynamic collection!
