Question and Passing Information...?

I see that The
Encyclopedia of Christianity, Vol. 5 is in pre-pub status. When I went to its actual product site the related link of Encyclopedia of Christianity vol 1-3 it leads to a wrong link...

I then clicked on Encyclopedia of Christianity Vol 4 and I clicked on the Vol 1-3 link there (it works) I also happened to notice that Volume 4 is included with Gold scholars and up.

I linked to the Volume 1-3 it does not have that it is apart of the base package Gold and up. No big deal there....I went on and checked my library and volumes 1-4 are there. Will the Gold scholars and up get that 5th volume? or will we have to buy the 5th volume?

Yeah, generally they don't give you additional volumes automatically when you've bought a partial collection before. The new (complete) set will have a new price that reflects its completeness, and typically you will have paid less than that for your incomplete set. So you have to buy the new volume. Sometimes if there are one or two additional volumes trickling out at a time, it's worth waiting until the whole set is complete, because sometimes they offer an "upgrade" bundle with all the new volumes for people who had bought the older incomplete set before, which would be cheaper than buying each additional volume one by one as they come out. In the case of the Encyclopedia of Christianity, though, there is only this one last 5th volume, no more. So you can go ahead and order it in pre-pub as that'll be the best price you can get (unless it goes on Christmas special some year or something, but even then, pre-pub is usually a better deal).

I've noticed in cases like this that when the packages get a version upgrade additional books are often added and these can include/typically include those resources that are new volumes within a current set. For instance a previouse version upgrade of gold added a thirteenth volume to NIGTC and L3 to L4 brought NAC from 31 to 37 volumes (all new ones), Pillar from 8 to 10, and the Encyclopedia of Christianity from 1-3 to include 4. It may be a reasonable assumption to think that upon next version update Ecyclopedia of Christianity vol. 5 would be included along with the three new Pillar volumes that are on prepub in the case of the platinum collection. It,s not gauranteed and it may be quite awhile til another version upgrade, even a small one.

Yes, that's true. I was understanding William's question to mean: if we have the latest version of Scholar's Gold already, will we automatically get vol 5 when it ships, to which the answer I think is no. But whenver the next version of Scholar's Gold comes out (Logos 5?) there will be an upgrade price for that, and it will most likely include the missing volumes that have come out in the interim, and indeed that might be an overall cheaper way to go. But it's still not an automatic update (free) which I think William was hoping it would be. (Forgive me if I misread your post, William.)

Before L4 I had L3 original languages.... When I upgraded to L4 I went to platinum. Which gave me volumes 1-4 of this Encyclopedia set. As it is now...I can get this volume 5 only if I pay the pre pub price....If I could or wanted to wait until L5...then I would likely get this vol 5 free??

No, when Logos revises its collections again history shows that they will likely include vol 5 (presuming they don't drop the Encyclopedia of Christianity from the collections). You will be given an upgrade price at that time to get the new books to the Platinum level. This upgrade price (per book) will likely be cheaper than if you finish the encyclopedia collection now. However, if you need this book or don't want to wait a couple of years jump on the pre-pub.

Like Kevin says. The only thing I'll add is to point out that when you upgraded to L4 you paid to go to Platinum from Original Languages, so you didn't get volume 4 for free. Even if someone had Gold before (which I did) they had to pay a "minimum cross-grade" price to get L4 and all the new resources that came with it. So there was no free lunch.

As has been indicated, though there is no free lunch, upgrades provide for a heavily discounted lunch. When I looked at the great resources gained moving from L3 Gold to L4 Platinum, it was an easy decision. While volume 5 of The Encyclopedia of Christianity is $65 prepub, it will doubtlessly be included in the next upgrade and will, in essence, cost a good bit less. I realize I'm rehashing things already stated or implied, but I'm trying to work out in my mind whether I want to let a resource that I like to have but do not often use stand on my prepub page or cancel it and wait till the next upgrade to acquire it. Then again, perhaps I need to consult it more often.

There is no harm in letting it stand on your prepub page all the way up until you get the announcement that it's shipping soon. You can cancel a prepub order up to the last day before the day it ships. (Don't risk leaving it until the actual ship date, because you never know what time they'll release it and you might be stuck buying it when you really were thinking of backing out.) If the pre-pub ships before the next upgrade you've got a bird in the hand vs. waiting for two in the bush. If you don't need this resource very much, though, then you're better off waiting for the next upgrade.

Nicely summarizes the way I do pre-pubs, Rosie. I've canceled more than one at the last minute, usually with regret but necessary, but I more often see a way to let the order go through. Without pre-pubs, my Logos library would be much smaller, to be sure.

Back to the resource of the OP, it's interesting that the pre-pub price is about the same as the going price for the print version.
