Considering a new computer--MUST run L3.

I am getting close to buying a new laptop to replace my current 2007 XPS15. I am looking at ebay systems with no OS (I would install my own copy of Vista w/ IE7 <--a must). I'm also looking at a new system in the $1500-2000 range with current OS. But the key critical issue is having IE7 on the system because L3 runs best with that version of Explorer.

I guess my first question is...is there any way to get a stand alone copy of IE7 anywhere that I could load myself?

Also, what options do I have for emulators, etc. on current systems w/ contemporary OSs?

I doubt that these computers will meet the minimum system requirements to run Libronix. Besides, with these defense computers you have to make sure that they have the right power supply (Eph. 6:10).

I found it using a search engine and have no idea about how well it works.

Amd I am sure you aware IE 7 is no longer supported

David, I looked at the same issue.  To cut to the chase, 'don't know'.

1. Any internet linkage to unsupported software, I judged absolutely not. So, older versions would have to be in a box.  Even if you didn't run them, their DLLs, etc would be accessable to nefarious motives.

2. That left 'purchasable' and 'me-able' systems to install in a virtual box. That part is quite do-able with XP; Vista, etc, don't know.

3. But I also decided, I've no confidence in what is under the new systems, or 'manufacturor-installed'. Granted MS seems to be better than Apple currently, but I decided, to consolidate on Apple (ios, etc).

4. That left me with my nice W7 laptop, which I only access Logos with (basically Bible software; Libby, my own, Logos6, etc). In a year, or so, that'll be unsupported, and move off the internet.

I did the same with my XP in the music room. Its music software (Logic) couldn't move to a new system due to timings, and Apple bought the software and dumped MS support. And the XP works fine ... purchased 13 yrs ago. Still sleekly smooth and fast.

David, for something like this I'd contact a PC builder in the area. He may know of some techie swap meets or other avenues for you to find a copy.

Microsoft download center recommends Internet Explorer 11 and Windows 10 instead of IE 7, but does have download button.  Vista includes IE7.

Oracle VirtualBox is free => https://www.virtualbox.org/ while Windows license for Virtual Machine (VM) is not.  VMWare offers an annual subscription.

One option is dual boot configuration.  Running a VM does need more hardware since have two (or more OS's) running at the same time.

Apple has many refurbished Mac models => http://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/mac

Oracle VirtualBox runs well on OS X as does Logos 6.  Commercial VM options for running Windows are VMWare and Parallels.

LibreOffice is available for Linux, OS X, and Windows, which has better cross platform compatibility than Microsoft Office.

I appreciate the comments so far. Graham, your IE link is very handy--I have never been able to find such a source before. Hopefully it's legit?

As Denise points out, I am concerned about running XP or Vista since they aren't being supported any longer. If I run a VM through Win10 Pro (it has a VM option called Hyper-V built in), can I surf the net through my base system and leave the VM in a quarantined state?

Ideally, I want to run L3 on the same system as L6 so I can swap back and forth. That is what I'm doing on my Vista system now, except I'm using L5 since L6 isn't Vista compatible even though I own L6.

These are the systems I'm currently considering. I know the VM will pull RAM (up to 900mb dedicated plus overflow, I think) from my base system. Is 8gb of RAM sufficient, or should I move to the 16gb. I don't want to spend more than I need to but I don't want to regret not buying what I need.

Also, if someone knows of better options for what I'm trying to do, I'm all ears.

I used IE9 at one point with the patch, and the notes function (the primary reason I continue to use L3) was significantly affected. In particular, certain spacing elements were lost--lots of extra work and time wasted fixing these issues. I had to do an OS reinstall (a blessing in disguise), which reverted me back to the original IE7 setup and it works as I like it.

Can't speak to W10's virtual, but W7's duplicates the system installed .... ie XP included a wifi on/off, which I keep off.  I've watched to see if any hint of in-box wifi activity ... haven't seen any over the years I've used it.

David there is a two hundred and sixty dollar difference between the two systems. I say go for the larger drive and increased memory. Your entire system will fly, not just Logos.

I use VMware Workstation Player 12 to run a virtual machine with XP on my Windows 10 computer.  It works well, and if you were to get a virus, it would be easier to deal with in the virtual machine.  The link says trial, but it is free for personal use.

I  bought the computer with the bigger RAM & SSD, but got it as a refurbish for right at $1350. The major diff is a 1-yr. warranty w/ the refurb vs. a 4-yr. warranty from Dell. My question now regards transferring files from my current Vista system. I am considering using Laplink PC Mover to transfer my Vista files (L3 primarily) to the new system.

My question is...since I'm intending to use Laplink to transfer Vista files to a VM on my Win 10 system, should I use an older version of Laplink that handles Vista files (which is cheaper) or do I need a newer version that works on Win 10?

If you install it in the VM, you only need the Vista version. The VM has to be the one that runs on Windows 10.

Thanks for the reply. The computer I bought was returned a couple of days ago due to both software and hardware issues, so I will still need to confront this at some point in the future when I get a new system.
