LGBTQ etc : the New Testament

I know there has been a lot of interest in questions related to sexuality in the last couple years here on the forum. Just wanted to point out that this month's sale features a 35% discount on https://www.logos.com/product/46747/the-new-testament-on-sexuality

There are lots of books tackling issues from the vantage point of ministry, culture, or debate. This resource seems to concentrate on an exposition of the NT materials. I won't say more here, just look at the TOC if you are interested.

I found the following review on this book that is alarming; but then again, prove all things, hold fast what is good:

"This was an outstanding book that defends the historic reading of the Bible - that homosexuality in all its manifestations is sin. Thoroughly exhaustive, he addresses all the revisionist assertions and arguments. I especially appreciate his inclusion of all the pertinent studies that have been conducted - in particular those that show that homosexuality can indeed be "cured," with about the same success rate as reported by Alcoholics Anonymous or smoker cessation programs. This book is very technical, but if you want "the" book on the subject, this is it.

At the same time, I cannot give it a full 5-stars. Why? Because the author openly accepts the Documentary Hypothesis, many of the conclusions of the Jesus Seminar, and he believe Paul is wrong in certain places (see, for example p345). Because of his rejection of inerrancy and his admitted belief that the Bible contains errors, I wonder: upon what epistemological foundation he can write with such conviction that on the topic of homosexuality the Bible gets it right?

In sum: great book, but his liberal doctrine of the Bible undermines the foundation of the edifice he so masterfully builds."

As is all sin. Thank the lord we are all justified by grace and not works because we all fall short (me more than most :-))

James 2:24 may correct your thinking. Grace and Works that God has prepared before hand that we should walk in them do justify too (Ephesians 2:10; James 2:17,24, 26). Whatever works of obedience God wants you to perform you must do in order to be justified. Now works of righteousness that you do yourself and come up with them on your own and not what God has prepared-- those don't justify, but don't exclude all works because that's not Biblical, is a lie from Satan. This is not about theology is about facts and common Biblical sence. If works of obedience don't justify then go and do or be whatever you want since it's grace only, no? Be gay, be an adulterer, a rapist, it doesn't matter as long as you "accept Jesus into your heart" - but I know Biblically speaking Grace won't justify you engaging in those kind of works and be ok with God. Back to basics buddy and you'll know the difference between the grace only and the reality that grace requires us to do the works God wants us to do Titus 2:11-14

So back to the book, it looks interesting given its scope. Has there been anything else like it?

As always, whatever the book may be or claim, we as Christians can benefit from whatever truth is contained in it despite the conclusions of the author. Reading things like this or Gagnon's book within the Tradition of the Church helps protect us from erroneous conclusions and heresy. Its when we depart from that Tradition that we go astray.

While this is the case it can represent queer as well. Some people prefer the term as a sign of empowerment reclaiming a word of hurt to be a badge of honour. Similar to how some african americans use the "N" word to describe themselves. As in that case it likely is not wise to use that unless you are within the community. I even knew of one Minster who referred to himself as Queer. Even though he is straight he saw it as a solidarity with a group he saw marginalized and needing support.

I have the Paperback book of THE BIBLE AND HOMOSEXUAL PRACTICE: TEXTS AND HERMENEUTICS by Robert Gagnon, and I can tell you, it just blew my mind out of the water! It opened up my eyes to a lot of things where homosexuality is concerned, and how we are to treat them with the love and compassion of Christ; while not agreeing with the sin that they are entrapped in.

As an ex-homosexual delivered and set free by the power of Jesus Christ, I consider this book the definitive work on Homosexuality, and rate it at 5 stars.

However, while thankful that it is in VYRSO, it really should be in LOGOS.

I have the Paperback book of THE BIBLE AND HOMOSEXUAL PRACTICE: TEXTS AND HERMENEUTICS by Robert Gagnon, and I can tell you, it just blew my mind out of the water! It opened up my eyes to a lot of things where homosexuality is concerned, and how we are to treat them with the love and compassion of Christ; while not agreeing with the sin that they are entrapped in.

This is it as far as I am considered. We all sin and we need to love each other as ourselves while not loving the sin.
