Works of Martin Luther on Community Pricing Closing this Friday

Hi everyone,

Just in case you've missed it, this 2 volume set

is available to bid on until Friday.

At the moment it is $12 but perhaps just two or three bids will bring it down to $11!

It is an interesting set which would provide a good place to start reading Martin Luther himself. In these volumes there are selections from his writings together with introductions and notes by prominent Luther scholars from the early 20th century.

This has a VERY good chance to go below 10 dollars, if you are sitting on the fence, it is now time to bid, it would be nice to get it down to at least 8 dollars

Well, those two or three people have placed their bids and it's down to $11. I love this stage in the Community Pricing process when we can watch the graph change and the price drop as more people bid. Why not join in the fun?

I really do think it is a great little set for those whose core interests may not be Luther but still want/need to be familiar with his work. These volumes are early attempts to provide “critical” editions of his work, and they present many of the foundational ideas of Luther's thought as well as provide some of his key polemical works.

Of course, those studying Luther and related subjects will find them useful for many reasons.

If it helps you make a decision, here's the TOC for each volume.

I could have sworn that the Philadelphia/Holman edition of Luther was 6 volumes. Unfortunately lost mine in a move years ago...

There are additional volumes produced by Holman-Philadelphia by a different editor. However, they were produced a bit later than these two and are not in the public domain. Unfortunately, volumes of that age that are still in copyright are quite difficult to obtain.

Hi Matthew,

I've looked into this a little and found the six volumes at the Haithi Trust, though I cannot access them. It looks like they can only be accessed in the US. See

It says there they date from 1915-1932 which would mean they're out of copyright - unless it was renewed at a later stage.

Perhaps there's a possibility the other volumes could be included sometime?

why would you do that? Your bid of $11 is good for the bid, you'll only pay $10 nevertheless, as everybody ho jumps in at any price at or over the winning bid.

There is no advantage to lowering your bid. If you bid $11, that also means your bid counts at $10, $9, $8, etc.

The most important thing is the number of bids.

It will not drive the price lower, no. If you bid $11, you've already bid $7.

No. Since your bid at $11 already is a bid for $7 as well (as is mine at $12 and anybody's at $7 or over $7), the pricepoint at $7 does not change when those of us with higher bids bid $7 (which would risk losing the CP) or bid $10. The pricepoint at a certain price always reflects the cumulative bids of those at that price point and all bids above that.

If tons of new bidders (or bidders from below, say from $4) were to bid new (or update their bids to) $7, then the price point of $7 could rise to 100% and thus lower the deal. The same thing would be happening to the $7 pricepoint if those people were bidding $10 - plus they don't risk losing the CP.

Hi Milkman,

As far as I understand the system, the tactics you describe might be effective earlier in the process but not once 100% has been reached. The danger is though, that unless enough folk were to bid at $7 then the resource might be withdrawn (as so many were not long ago) since it looks like it will not be economical to produce.

I guess we're seeing this a little with the MobEd on Judges right now. Once lower bids were made available, the progress towards production almost froze and the graph has remained fairly static in spite of repeated attention being given to it in the forum.

So at this stage, as Matthew said, it's best to keep your original price and if more people come in and bid at that price then the price will lower.
