As far as I know there is no way to sort by descending series for year published. That being said, you can search decade published by using a wildcard search. Just use e.g. pubdate:201* in the search "in" field of your search query. Forgive me if you already know this.
There's probably a better way to do this, but when I'm looking for search results like that I create a collection for specific publication ranges, Such as resources published during the Reformation period, Or 19th century, or the 20th Century, Etc. Then search by those specific collections.
