Faithlife Study Bible - 2nd Edition

I just received word that the digital copy of the 2nd Edition of Faithlife Study Bible will shortly be available for download. Will be retaining the 1st edition as well so we can see changes. I saw no mention of this, one way or another, in the original announcement.

I wonder what all the differences will be; It would be nice to see a change log of what gets fixed but that would also consume more manpower which is why they probably don't do it

If one had planned ahead, a person could download a version of a resource to a tablet, PC, or phone. As long as that device is not connected to the Internet, then that version would be preserved.

The editors designed FSB to explore questions they had about the text, without regard to constraints of space. The digital content often runs much longer than what can fit on the page of a typical study Bible. These lengthy explorations provided an abundance of material for later editors to distill complex discussions into concise notes and articles for the print edition of FSB, which we are pleased to publish in partnership with Zondervan.

The explanatory blog post definitely gives reason to be concerned about likely losing the 1st edition.

A few answers to some of the questions posted in this thread:

No, the update to the FSB replaces the old version of the resource, just like any other update to a Logos resource. We're referring to this update as the "revised second edition" to emphasize how significant the changes are to the study bible. There is an updated copyright date but the citation and metadata will not include "Second Edition."

I can see where the new edition being "more concise" would benefit in print. However, I appreciate my digital resources being thorough.

The original effort to create the Faithlife Study Bible was done under an incredibly tight deadline. We realized later that there were portions of the study bible that were not up to our (Lexham's) standards. While preparing the resource for print was the primary goal behind the revisions, we also wanted to address the portions of the digital edition that were lacking. The overall word count in the study bible is smaller, but we think the overall quality of the product has been greatly enhanced—and we think you'll agree.

For text that no longer exists, the highlight will be deleted as well. For text that has been changed, the highlight will remain.

The highlight will still exist in the Note document where it was created (preserving any additional content that may have been added to the highlight), but the highlight will no longer be visible in the resource, since the text it should be displayed on no longer exists.

Sad to hear that we will potentially be losing some information, even if it means gaining other information in its place. I have both the original and revised version of the ISBE, and I use and value both of them. Having said that, Faithlife's decision makes sense and I support it. In a book designed to be digital from the beginning, long-term it does not seem reasonable to make a new library resource every time content is updated. If that were the case we might eventually wind up sorting through 20 copies of the FSB looking for which one contained a specific version of a comment we liked. [:S]

I guess we'll have to take your word for it, that nothing valuable was lost in making it shorter. But I hope no one ever offers to print the Lexham Bible Dictionary, since the constant adding and updating of material (without concern for space) is what makes it so valuable.

I share James' concern. I personally find the LBD and infographics content even more useful than the study Bible notes themselves. I hope the LBD content and infographics are all preserved in the new edition.

While on the subject of Logos and second editions ......

The IVP Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels comes in first and second editions. The first edition (2003) has 959pp and the second edition (2013) has 1120pp.

But the first edition is dearer than the second ... $54 to $48.

How does that work?
