Do you have a system to organize and retrieve content?

Recently I have been woking on using Logos better. I am amazed at the potential in the program....but in some ways the program could be better if I developed a index of topics and categorized content I found into that index....much like an old file cabinet, but better.

I think that it would take:

1. A detailed index of topics that would be for reference. (Printed out even)

2. New content regularly added under these topics.

I am interested in hearing of any systems anyone uses......

Topics, indeed an index of such, is built into the LCV dataset (Logos Controlled Vocabulary) but its contents are only accessible when searching with features like Topic Guide or Factbook, and the results you get depend on the resources in your library i.e. no list of available topics. However, I can't see the advantage of having such a list (similar to requesting a concordance for words in the bible) in these days of computer search engines.

Running a search implies that you know what you are searching for. Having a master list of topics would allow users to browse, which does not necessarily imply knowledge of what they are looking for. Browsing would allow users to stumble across topics they would never have thought or known to search for. It would in some ways be analogous to browsing your library and being pleasantly surprised to find gems you didn't know or forgot were there. That's my take on it, anyway, and I would love a master list (probably in the form of an interactive, possibly arranged into logical categories).

EDIT: The interactive could be called "Topic Browser." As an example, one category might be textual criticism, and it would contain subcategories dealing with manuscripts, text families, etc. This would allow users to start with a general idea and then drill down deeper into related topics suggested by the interactive. Subcategories could appear under multiple larger categories of needed.

EDIT: Here are two even better examples. First, say someone is studying the book of Revelation. The Topic Browser would pull up every item on the LCV that is relevant to Revelation and offer to open them up in Factbook if the user clicks on any of them. Second, suppose someone wants to study the Babylonian Empire. The Topic Browser would have subcategories containing entries dealing with geographical locations within the empire, various rulers, related archaeological finds, religion, etc. Users might decide they want to explore rulers, and they would be presented with a list of kings that they could individually open in Factbook.

That sounds great, it is even more that I was thinking. The thing I see is, I tag a note file with a great quote, it's relevant to several topics, I file it away but I forget I have it and if I don't know I have that tag, then I don't know to search for it.

My thoughts were to develop a master list of topics/tags (or some master list) and stick to those topics. Through the years you could retain much info.....

This sounds like something that can be accomplished right now using the Concordance tool, which is available with Logos Now.

Have you looked at Favorites? It is a great research tool and filing cabinet since you can drag almost anything there. Lists of bookmarked resources is just the beginning. Searches can be included, links to notes, and even layouts.

You can subordinate sub-topics by placing folders within folders.

Different folders can be used for different purposes. Whenever, I begin a research topic, I perform searches on my library and accumulate resources to investigate. I organize the resources in folders as I go. Web resources and other external resources can be located via notes which are included in the appropriate folders.

On the other hand, I have some folders dedicated to books of the Bible. Others are just for organizing my current and past reading.

A shortcoming seems to be the inability to search through favorites.
