Dear Bob, Please not another Dracula

I agree with you in principal MJ about titles not be pulled at the drop of a hat but this new store is openly branded as Faithlife / Logos Bible Software and so customers of Faithlifes other brands are going still hold certain expectations of what should or should not appear on this new store and the difficulty for Faithlife is that just as the Theological options of the customer base vary so will expectations of what is appropriate for them to sell even under this separate, but still linked, store.

Also I don't think it could be said we should not raise any objections to titles on this new store simply because feedback was given on a previous thread that asked about offering everything from a publisher under a separate store. Such feedback is not necessarily representative of the whole customer base, and I would say not even representative of those who participate on the forums regularly and is certainly not binding on anyone. That said I don't think a title should be pulled at the drop of a hat.

Personally i hope Dracula does make it onto this new store front. Price will determine if i purchase it. As for this other book I can see why people would raise concerns about the title alone, even if the genre is humor. Personally I have mixed feelings as to whether it's appropriate but I do think we should have the freedom to raise concerns about it or any other title that appears on this new store.

Did the person reporting this or removing it know that the book is humor? That it has excellent reviews? That the author was interviewed on NPR?

I suspect the Vyrso book Under the Sheets: The Secrets to Hot Sex in Your Marriage is more apt to be objectional.

When you asked on the forums about offering everything from a publisher, you received feedback insisting that it be under a separate store which you have done. You did not offer the option that anyone could complain about a book and get it removed without knowing anything about the book. I, for one, don't want to put up with another Dracula censorship situation. I would hope that we all had parents and teachers who taught us to self-censor what we read.

Censoring out all potentionally objectionable books from the new store whenever somebody hints arbitrarily at any book will not be feasible - and it's silly.

Looking for something to critizise there, people should rather lament about the geographical redtrictions and the high prices and simply ignore content they dislike. It works that way on Amazon too, I suppose.

I only posted the first book because it was linked in another thread so I gave the company a heads up before the complaints started, which obviously created the opposite effect, because people didn't get to see it, which is why I posted the link above. I don't think you understand. Faithlife is taking down the books because they never intended for them to be on their website in the first place. They were put on the website via an automated system, and their filters failed to catch them. The "complainants" are simply pointing out instances where it seems that the filters might have failed. They have the choice one way or the other. I certainly didn't scream out "SHAME! SHAME!" They took the book under question down directly after my posting, so if they had intended for it to be there, then they would not have reacted so quickly.

As Joseph has pointed out in some instances FL did not intended to sell the title, and until Bob states otherwise you continue to assume they want to sell the title about Lesbian Love. and are speaking out of turn by saying they want to sell it.

The question at hand is actually not whether we are are adult, that is a straw man argument design to distract from the real issue that is of concern to some of FL's customer - What does Faithlife now stand for ? Do they want to continue to be a company that:

We may all be adults. But many young seminarians and beginning Faithlife users are very young adults. When I see these things I pause before recommending Faithlife to younger ones. If Faithlife continues down this slope I for one will warn people away and suggest alternatives more in line with my convictions. So long as FL responds to "mistakes" quickly, I keep wondering why. If FL moves in a a positive direction of maintaining reasonable Christian values, I will recommend them vigorously and widely--and I do work with very many Bible school students.

I think we have more than a little evidence. My initial post simply pointed out the link to the book. The book was taken down within 30 minutes. My post was not negative, and the two posts that followed mine were positive. The fourth post, which was about 45 minutes after my initial posting, was the first negative post concerning the book. The book had already been taken down by that point, so if they had intended to have the book on their site, I seriously doubt they would have taken it down before receiving at least a handful of negative comments.

Again, I was one of those who wanted Logos to sell all books under another brand. I wanted that to happen so that we could get more Ancient Near Eastern histories and such that are sadly limited in Logos, and I assume that is the only way that is going to happen (there are indeed several in Kindle). I don't care to read the sex book, but I would have bought the book in question about kids if I had not seen the video that I linked above of the author reading it. It was too over the top for my taste, but I don't have a problem if someone else want to read it.

I simply did not believe, and I think I am correct, that Logos had intended this to be the time to start putting out "ALL" types of books, and I didn't expect Noet to be the brand under which it happened. I assume that Logos will make an announcement before the mass dropping of all types of books happens. So I tossed out an FYI to see if it was a mistake. Obviously it was or they wouldn't have pulled it before receiving any negative feedback.

I'm sorry -- I gave attention to the new book store too early. We haven't had time to go through and do all the reviewing we need to of the 15,000 titles for duplicates, pricing, content, etc.

We're going to try leaving this thread up and imploring you to not start another 'spelunking through the catalog to find objectionable content so I can post it to prompt others to start an argument over whether some / all / none of these books should be available for Logos.'

I'd just delete this thread except it makes a whole other group angry about censorship.. and so we try to avoid deleting threads.

The plan:

- We are going to offer a wide variety of content for all the reasons I've outlined. We're surely going to sell something that offends everyone.

- While acknowledging that everything will offend someone, and that much of the content will be completely un-related to biblical studies (https://ebooks.noet.com/products/70695/math-teachers-guide), we are going to reserve the right -- like any bookstore -- to remove from our shelves things that are both un-related to biblical studies and, in our subjective opinion, distasteful even to 'have on the shelf'. (Pornographic covers would seem like a candidate; we'll probably also avoid a few whole categories.)

- We're being fed books by automated feeds. We may not even see every title/book before it is fed into the catalog, so A) we'll be late sometimes, and we may disagree with you.

- Logos.com is pretty well curated, though even there there is great theological (and other) disagreement. Ebooks.noet.com will be very lightly and infrequently curated. When in doubt, we'll lean towards inclusion.

Posting provocative titles and covers is just trolling. We avoid deleting posts/threads whenever possible, and we are happy to let you debate our philosophy of a big book store as long as you'd like. But please, let's stop the 'let me find the most offensive example and post it' method of argument.

First thank you for your testimony Kenute. That is awesome that Christ delivered you from that sin of homosexuality. I just saw earlier on youtube skeptics that say gays can't convert into straight people and you're living proof that indeed a homosexual person can convert to a heterosexual person.

Second that also proves just how powerful Christ can be. He is the bringer of Eternal Life and it also shows that the Power of the Cross can change a person be it a Muslim,Atheist,Gay,etc.

Third I checked to make sure that FL took that book of the site(without exposing myself to the site. I can tell via the tab)and saw that they indeed took that book off. Thank you FL for doing that!

My problem is WHY does FL / Logos need to be connected to the new ebooks.noet.com store. It could be a stand alone without reference to FL / Logos Noet is its own app.

FaithLife / Logos Bible Software have been marketed as Christian company & products, after looking at the book in question to see if it was still on the new site, I then just did a search for "Lesbian" and found that you have 59 other books connected to the LGBTQ topic and lifestyle.

As Christian the Bible is very clear to us in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 that the above is Sin and that no one that lives in and continues in this LGBTQ lifestyle will enter God's Kingdom.

Bob & FL / Logos if you want freedom in listing any book on the new site without condemnation from the user base. Then do not connect the Neot site with the other stated Christian sites!

As for me because you have made the choice to add these type of books that support LGBTQ, I chose not to support the new web site at all with my $$$ and to inform my friends to do the same.

There are a number of reasons to expect that the title will be removed. Remember that we have peeked into an unannounced site. Until they announce it officially, we should not jump to conclusions.

I built and for a time curated a Christian theological library. To help build our stacks we would often buy bulk boxes of books off of eBay. Some contained incredible gems that made the whole purchase worthwhile. A lot of stuff was just mediocre but shelved anyway. Some works I vehemently disagreed with but didn't hesitate to shelve because they held value for comparative study etc. A few titles were both offensive and useless and got pulped.

Drawing those lines was not at ALL easy. Faithlife faces similar choices here, and they're not easy. Even if it's automated. Even if they'remaking money off of it.

As a theologian, I would like to have in Logos some titles that would absolutely horrify quite a few people on this forum. I cannot write with integrity about, or against, a particular work or viewpoint if I don't have access to it. (As I once only half-jokingly told my students, "I've read Mary Daly so that you don't have to!") What's true in theology is true in other areas. I appreciate Faithlife's efforts to make more and more works available to us, even offensive ones. That doesn't mean lines shouldn't be drawn and titles not pulled, just that I'd suggest charity when the lines are drawn in ways one does not agree with, and allowance for mistakes in automation.

If things like this are popping up on homepages and in our inboxes, that's another issue, but let's be face it: people looking for smut on the internet aren't going to all of a sudden think, "Hmm, let me go to a Bible software site and see what prurient things I can dig up there." Are they?
