Deleting Past Messages

What is the purpose of the message icon in the upper-right hand corner of the group main page?  How do I delete or clear those messages?  Thanks.

    Hi Ed, you can use Faithlife to send private messages to other people in your groups. To clear the unread indicator, just click on any unread messages.
