Base Package differences.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please forgive me if, the answer to my question lies elsewhere on the forum. I am new to Logos and deep bible study as a whole, and am somewhat confused by the base packages. I am rooted in the Church of Christ. The Church of Christ is regarded as part of the "restoration" movement. When browsing the base packages, there is no package that represents that segment, so I purchased the Silver Standard. Now, after searching for topics in the store, such as hermeneutics, I've come to discover that some topics are part of different base packages. Did I goof and buy the wrong base package?

Honestly, I have used an ill gotten copy of BibleWorks 7 for sometime and have always felt guilty about it. This came up when studying with my mentor today. He didn't badger me about it or any such thing, but did mention that perhaps I should go legit. ill admit the Logos purchase was somewhat of an impulse buy and I didn't speak with him about it first. But after reading so many positive reviews about the software and having such a huge thirst for knowledge, i just had to get it.

Thank You for taking time to read my post. I would greatly appreciate any scholarly advice you can offer.

No, you did not goof ... there are a number of Restoration Movement users who are active in the forums and will greet you. There is an effort to get resources sufficient to support a RM base package. And there are a number of personal books shared that are RM oriented. If none of those people step in and show you what's available, I'll step in.

Welcome to the forum and to the wonderful world of Logos Bible a software. I'm a minister for the Southbridge church of Christ and have added my voice to those seeking a Restoration package. Right now there isn't one as MJ already mentioned, but there are a number of resources. Leafwood press ACU has a number of books in Vyrso (part of Faithlife and works in Logos). You can also find books by Everett Ferguson and others.

I wasn't so much, "seeking an RM based" Logos. But I was wondering if one of the other base packages and materials that would come with it, would be better. I think it's a little weird that a few hermeneutics books are part of the "Baptist" base package but not the standard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but hermeneutics is a central topic. Right?

There is some overlap to entice people to get different packages. The Baptist package includes a lot of Baptist biography and history, but also some excellent conservative commentary sets and, as you noticed, hermeneutics books. The Standard package is balanced, but does not include every book on central topics.

Welcome and thanks for introducing yourself! Logos is a fantastic tool and has always had great library resources (and keeps adding each year) and the study tools are fantastic as well, albeit at times overwhelming for some. Thankfully, there are multiple methods and resources for training and getting familiar with them.

Very cool! We have people (as you can tell) from a variety of backgrounds. On the forums, we show respect for one another's background (most of the time!). I'm also from the RM. Group up in the "independent" portion, but my dad was a missionary and we worked with the acapella branch while in Germany. I've been "in ministry" in a variety of capacities, but now am a hospice and hospital chaplain. Good to have you aboard. There are several people, as have been mentioned, who are part of the RM's various branches, or have a history with them. I'll let them identify themselves.

Several have responded to this. Allow me to confirm/elaborate: probably the Standard would be the package that is most "broad-based." What package is appropriate is mostly according to what you want. Probably some of the resources will not be has interesting/useful to you in each package. Many people identify both individual books and sets (like commentaries or encyclopedias) that they want and identify what base packages offer them. Sometimes several denominational base packages will offer the same resources, and sometimes on different levels (for instance, the New Covenant commentary starts in SDA Bronze, but silver in Reformed and Pentecostal and Charismatic, Platinum in Methodist, and Portfolio in Lutheran. As you may have noticed, those packages increase in size and price. You might develop your own strategy for how you acquire resources and use base packages to do so.

Just as an FYI, each basepackage across the different brands start off with the same amount of resources and the same cost, so that if you are a brand new user you will pay the same amount for Bronze in Standard as you will in Reformed. and get the same amount of resources. It seems they have tried to populate those different denominational package families with resources that will be especially desired by them (such as many Luther works for the Lutheran, etc) but then also add more "generic" resources that will be appreciated as well as spread out desired commentary sets (see example above) to make each family/denomination attractive and desireable. Sometimes, such as with New Covenant commentary, there are multiple ways to get the resource, sometimes, it only appears in one denominational family. (Anchor is in Lutheran Portfolio, eg. . . . actually it is also in the mammoth "Standard Collectors"). So you have to be more choosy. If you really like a particular set, then you may likely want to consider getting it in a base package--it is often cheaper to get the package than the set, and you get many other resources as well.

As for RM resources, if you are interested in it, there are many College Press resources as well.

I wanted the "Silver" because it offered advanced bible study and some of the other features are intermediate level. I LOVE having access to the Greek and Hebrew texts and the Silver Ed was intermediate there too. That, above all else, was my favorite thing about BibleWorks. Having used the software for a few days now, I'm quite pleased with my base package. I had no idea there is an online library, I've found a few of the topics I was looking for, in that library.

The general forum gets these kinds of things, but I see you already wrote a review on the resource itself. That is probably the most appropriate place, and the most likely for someone considering the resource to look.

If you want to discuss theology, then www.christiandiscourse.com is the place to do it.

The reason for that is to keep the focus on the use of the software itself and stay away from the rancor that often develops when Christian brother and sisters, ahh, "discuss" their differences. [;)] Considering all the traditions Logos serves, it's best to do it on a site whose purpose is theological discussion.

Greetings Raymond. I am also with the Restoration Movement and, like several others, associated with the Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. There has been some talk (mostly whispering from us users) among our group that there is a growing interest in have a base package. We can only hope. [:D] There are some great resources (books) by authors/teachers/theologians from all three branches of the Restoration Movement in Logos. Everett Ferguson has some resources dealing with Restoration History. Jack Cottrell has several resources in the area of theology (and he is scheduled to do a couple of the MobileEd courses in the (hopefully) near future on Theology. Denver Sizemore has a workbook or two on Basic Doctrinal studies.

I have ~ 250 RM resources in my library (not all are available in Logos, yet) and some of those I've been able to make into Personal Books (another very useful tool in Logos) from some files/notes/scans that others have formatted to work properly in Logos. Another forum contributor, Calvin Habig, has posted several of his files for the purpose of helping us have some RM documents. You can find them in the "Files" forum. College Press was mentioned as a publishing house and they have quite a few books available as does Standard Publishing. The Standard Lesson Commentary has been available in Logos for about the last 5 years or so.

I hope you enjoy your venture in Logos. Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't worry too much about asking a question that's already been asked. Most of the MVP's have been using Logos for many years and are here to help the rest of us learn how to better use Logos.
