Suggestion: Logos 4 Mac – User Videos

There must a a fair number of highly skilled Logos 4 Mac users who could produce short videos which can show others of us how to do things in Logos 4 Mac. They could then post them somewhere (?) with a link from this page. Then all those little ploys which are occasionally revealed in the course of other threads could be readily accessible for all.

Hi guys, what would you want these videos to show? I am planning a series of Mac videos on Study / Sermon preparation, but doing that now in Alpha would be a waste since not all the features are there and stuff will change. Anyway, if there are some things I could do that would not be obsolete in 1 week, I would consider it. I am open to suggestions.

I was under the impression that basically the Alpha was a rolling program of implementation of features, and that, basically, once a feature was available that that was that once it was stable and the UI developers moved on to other features. If I am right in that understanding, then wouldn't a video that was made for a feature that was implemented be valid even when we moved to Beta or beyond? It's just that little things which are obvious to some people are far less so to others of us.

Even with years of using Logos from 1.6 onwards, the step change to L4Mac has left me feeling de-skilled and I have to learn again how to do things I was accustomed to doing easily. (Mind you maybe that's been exacerbated in my case, because my change to Mac from Windows coincided with the launch of L4. I've had to unlearn a lot of L3 in using L for Mac 1 and L4 Mac.)

I just thought simple, short videos might help - of the Tips & Tricks variety. If someone has found a neat way of doing something, even something apparently simple, it would be good to share that knowledge and we could all become more skilled users of L4Mac. The Windows side has a lot of training help. Here on the Mac side we have zilch, apart from what we work out for ourselves or pick up from tips, almost as asides, from others. I'm not blaming Logos – far from it, after all the UI developers are working flat out and doing a great job, but I thought we users could plug that gap meantime until more comprehensive, in-house materials are available. Your own "log-posting" video is a prime example of what I mean. It was produced by a user (you, Joe) to help the more technologically-challenged of us (me) to do something as apparently simple as posting logs. Of course, if I had wanted to (and known how to do the video thing in Mac [:$]) that could have been done as a little video with commentary.

I'd be interested in your observations.

Most features, when they're first added to the Mac product, are incomplete. In some cases, they're so incomplete as to be only minimally useful. In other cases, they're more like 80-90% complete, with only some additional polish to be added. Still, in other cases, the boundaries of a given feature are not incredibly clear-cut.

When a given feature (or group of features) is 100% complete, it should work just like it does on Windows, with a few exceptions. Examples of exceptions would be things like: the Windows product probably won't ever have "Send to Keynote", but the Mac version will; The application menus (e.g. Tools and Guides) are in the menu bar on the Mac rather than in the toolbar, where they live in Windows. But, the core of a given feature's functionality will function the same way on both platforms. So, in that way, the videos that exist for Windows, as well as training materials produced based on the Windows version, should translate incredibly well to the Mac version.

Personally, I think of it this way (and others may think of it differently, including other Logos developers): We're developing a single Bible study software product. We're implementing it on two platforms and, where appropriate, we'll conform to the idioms and conventions of the individual platforms (e.g. menu placement, keyboard shortcut modifiers, integration with other software). But Bible Word Study and the Exegetical Guide (and most other features) won't be radically different on Mac vs. Windows when we're finished.

For reference, here are the videos filmed using the Windows product. If ours doesn't work like it does in the video (or VERY close to how it works in the video), either a) it's a bug or b) we're just not done with that part yet:

Wasn't a waste of time, but an inspiring idea. Something I can't wait to see implemented by fellows like Joe! I have been using Logos for about 6 years now. While I have a Scholar's Library I feel I probably use it on an elementary level, doing just the basic of tasks in the most basic of ways.

It's like using a fork to cut your food instead of a knife. It will get the job done, but pick up the knife already!

David, I concur. We share the same dilemma.. It is a great system and I am thankful for it but wish I could master it to the same degree I experienced with my PC.

Most of the Videos on the main website will work for basic instruction on both PC and Mac. However, as L4mac develops, there may be some gaps and I will gladly produce some videos as time permits to help with elements unique to L4mac.

In the meantime, if you have questions about specific features, please ask and someone can post screenshots, videos or written instructions. [Y]
