Is Platinum Worth It Just for Hermeneia and Ancient Chrisitian Commentary?

I'm still debating and deciding what I want to do with a L7 base package. Generally I always go with Platinum. My Platinum upgrade would be a little over $700 should I go for it. I already have Anchor and some of the books in it, but two biggies I don't have are Hermeneia and Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture.

One aspect my library is lacking is a good set of critical commentaries, plus I've heard good things about Ancient Christian Commentary as another good set to consult during Bible study.

My question is, is it worth springing for Platinum just to pick up these two volumes alone (plus the other content I don't already have)? How beneficial have these two volumes been in Bible study and research? What other Platinum gems are worth the cost of purchasing it?

I took that plunge just for Hermeneia (I already had ACC). That is a massive savings on a highly academic/technical commentary that is one of the most detailed sets I've seen so far. Platinum came with other collections that were new to me too, but that one was the deciding factor for me. Not to mention 3 Mobile Ed classes! (new to me)

I will say that ACC is also an awesome set of resources. It is excellent for historical studies since it has been edited to include things that are otherwise untranslated/unavailable or easily accessible anywhere else.

I agree with James, I think if you were just going to do it for those two, it is totally worth it. I'm sure there is some other good resources that will be new to you that you may use too, considering you have a 700 dollar upgrade to L7 Platinum.

Unfortunately, those are either available in base packages only in tradition families I am otherwise not interested in acquiring, or not in any base package at all.

Then the package would be a good buy for you with the added bonus of a superb resource in ACCS.

My only previous experience with Hermenia was the Hebrews volume in grad school. I found it to be long on critical issues and short on Bible commentary. Note that it is less than conservative.

I am not Lutheran, but I stumbled across the higher-end Lutheran base packages that include an incredible set of resources I have been eyeing. For example, Lutheran Portfolio includes Heremeneia, ICC, Interpretation, Anchor Yale Bible, and much more, but it is much, much cheaper than Collector's, which includes most of these, but also a lot of things I don't need. Just FYI.

I was asking from the POV of a well-rounded collection of commentaries. I don't expect any commentary series to change my overall theological positions, but it is good to know what "those folks over there" are saying, for intra-Christian apologetics if nothing else.

I've had ACC a long time. I like the breadth of historical, pastoral insight. I found it useful when I was preaching from a text, to help zero in on pastoral needs and perspectives. Occasionally a nice quote. So different from most commentaries.

Hermeneia--I don't own it. It is a highly valued set, often referred to by other commentaries. I used it frequently while in school. At that time, and with the commentaries I used, I found it highly technical and not often useful for preaching (I know you could argue its usefulness, but I would say it is less obvious at times than a commentary that is less technical. Sometimes the flow of argument was about issues more in the academic circles than specifically for pastoral/practical theology.

I would love to add Hermeneia, because of its reputation, but I am unclear how often I would really use it. I'm sure others can chime in on its usefulness from a ministry standpoint. Perhaps they have a broader experience.

I have a few followup questions to my original question:

1. How does owning ACC compare to simply accessing the ECF through the Passage Guide? I've heard the ACC re-arranges much of the content in ECF, so I'm curious as to how it differs from directly accessing ECF from the Passage Guide.

2. How does Hermeneia compare to Baker Exegetical NT, Word, and NICOT/NICNT in terms of usefulness between those other commentaries? For exegetical projects, I've generally consulted NICOT/NICNT, Word, and for the NT, Baker, plus New American. I don't own the complete NICOT/NICT, Word, or Baker yet. I've only purchased individual volumes on demand as I've needed them.

The reason I'm asking is when I complete my M Div, my goal is to go for a PhD in Systematic Theology and my career goal is to teach Systematic Theology in seminary and Bible college. Therefore, would I heavily use these two resources to warrant the $700+ price tag for them?

Another collection I'm eyeballing if I don't go Platinum is Baptist Silver. For around $250, I can get a wealth of theological resources (plus I'm a Baptist as well as likely going to a Baptist seminary for my PhD), plus some other resources I need immediately to complete my M Div with, as well as some other resources I want. I'm trying to decide though which will truly be the better fit for me.

I have NICNT, Word, Baker Ecegetical NT, and Hermeneia for Matthew. Been looking over those. Hermenenia looks beneficial, but I'm still "on the fence".

ACC, Hermeneia, and Continental were worth it enough for me. I can see myself heavily using them.

My only regret is why I didn't have these commentaries the last two semesters when I so badly needed them? :-)
