Did this happen after an upgrade or after a fresh install?

I can confirm. It happened to me after an upgrade.

What device are you using and which version of Android? Does the issue only happen after an upgrade or does it also occur after a fresh install?

Kevin,
My device is a OnePlus One (bacon), and I am on Android 6.0.1 (August security patches).
I had only updated before. I uninstalled, cleared cache/data, and reinstalled. Now that everything has synced, it works just fine. I don't know what the issue was.
Sincerely,
-David

Kevin,
After a day of use, it is force closing on startup again. I've used my discipleship journal reading plan, downloaded the esv/na28/na28apparatus, and I've listened to the ESV Audio Bible.
I hope that helps. I just submitted a crash report through Google's reporter.

I'm experiencing a similar issue. It's been happening for a couple of beta builds now.
What I've noticed is that when the Bible app is idle for a long time (between 12 and 24 hours), opening it causes it to crash. But opening it immediately after the crash it launches successfully.
I've submitted a crash report yesterday.
- Pixel C (Android 7.0)
- Bible App 5.5.1 (Build 505011020)

Mine is also crashing before startup finishes. I tried a fresh install and it opened up first time but then subsequent attempts resulting in crash before it completely loads. I cleared the data/cache and it acted the same way as a fresh install (fine upon first use, but then subsequent crashes)
OnePlus X (Android 5.1.1)

Sounds like the app needs to be Fired Up.
Anyone have a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 they can try it on?

We're aware of the crash on startup and crash while the app is idle in the background issues; we are working on fixing these for the next release.

This wasn't able to be fixed in the 5.5.3 Beta, but we're still working on it. Thanks for your patience.
