Custom reading plan for resources other than bibles

The procedure to create custom reading plans for books other than bibles looks to be fairly simple using a clippings document as the source. Creating the clippings document is rather tedious but that seems to be the only option that works. Anyway, a couple of basic questions:
1. Are the readings for each day actually contained in the reading plan document itself or simply references to the original source document(s)? This matters if you want to use the plan on a device that does not have all of the source documents.
2. What must you do to ensure that the readings have the standard "Start Reading", "Keep Reading" and "Mark Read" links inserted? My first attempt had them but my second attempt using two different source documents did not.

Not sure why you need to create a clippings document to create a reading plan for a book. Why not just create a plan for the book itself?

The hyperlink in the plan will simply open the resource. The content of the reading is not stored in the reading plan

You should not have to do anything. When the plan is created, you should see these prompts in the resource. If you do not, chances are the Reading Plans visual filter is turned off for that resource.
