Atlas Tool and Atlas Resources

As I read a passage of the Bible, I often come across place names and want to see where they are on a map in relation to other places. I have the Atlas Tool and four different Atlas resources. I still haven't found an easy way to interact with my Atlases.

How are you using these tools and resources?

There are many ways to interact with your Logos Library Atlases and Maps. My favorite way is to right mouse click on a place, and find the place tag in the right context menu and then hit search all resources. I then change the search to only include my collection of maps and handbooks as shown in the two screen shots below:

Other options include the Bible Places and Media section in the Passage Guide as well as selecting Factbook from the right context menu instead of search.

Playing around with your ideas I find that the Atlas Tool places Ziklag on the map for me, but to search my Collection of four Atlases I need to search for "Ziklag" rather than <Place Ziklag> which returns no results. The search for "Ziklag" in my Atlas Collection takes me to articles mentioning Ziklag and generally there is a map near by.

Does this sound right to you?

That's my experience as well. Not all the Atlas monograph resources are tagged as well as I'd like. I was searching for <Place Shechem> in the Holman Bible Atlas and got no results. but I got many results with a plain "shechem" search

I find plain text searching using a "Media" search and an Atlas resource collection gets good results. But I usually have to run several different types of searches to make sure I didn't overlook anything.

When doing general Bible reading, sometimes I come across a place that I want to see on the map. For a quick glimpse, I right click on the city's name and then select "Atlas" from the menu. Logos then opens up the atlas with the city.

I get results only from Logos Deluxe Maps using the place, so you are getting results similar to mine. Logos needs to do some tagging on the older Atlases. I now see your original point better. Probably best to run a search on your collection not using the place tag. The other option is a media search not using the place tag with allows you to avoid having to use collections and will pick up some additional maps that may not be in your collection.

That's my experience as well.

Mine too. I've bought a few Atlas monographs and that they don't function in the way that I would like them to.

To extend the discussion a bit. I find a resource called "Biblical Places Maps" and was wondering how it compares to the Atlas Tool in the experience of other Logos users.

Biblical Places was the earlier Logo4-5 mapping solution. Advantages: off-line, TOC of maps. I use a PB that lists the maps by approx date, to make use more efficient.

My favorite however remains IVPs New Bible Atlas. One of the few (1 of 1) that includes geology, farming, mining, climatic rain patterns, etc in addition to 3-D-ish maps.

Bob said Atlas is getting a new engine, So, looks like Logos8. Mapping's never been a Logos interest. To me, maps better describe YHWH than one more commentary.

Jan, I followed up my initial post indicating that several of the Atlases did not have the tagging I assumed. Apologies for the confusion. I think you can run a media search for the location without <place> in front and get to maps etc. from the Atlas. I do not have the Zondervan Atlas, so cannot confirm this. Again, I apologize if my misunderstanding misled you.

Both Holman Bible Atlas (HBA) and Zondervan Atlas of the Bible (ZAB) provide those features too. I have them and also the New Bible Atlas (NBA). For example, here's example calendar graphics from all three:

If you like maps and charts and textual descriptions, I recommend both HBA and ZAB in addition to NBA. They both have nice graphics that resize to fit the column whereas NBA's images require scrolling to view them if the window is too small. NBA is still good, but it's from 1985, and it shows.

I had bought the ZAB a few days back, so that's good news! HBA I'll take a look at. (No ZAB download, since I have to be fair to Britannica, since she was supposed to download, but the blue meanies at Bellingham stepped in ... all my books receive utmost respect, regardless their nefarious content).

It takes a fair amount of work to annotate the place names in a resource: for example, there are three different places named Bethany in the biblical text, two of which are important to a number of stories and therefore referenced frequently in other atlases. Likewise, many biblical places are known by a number of different names: there are at least eight different proper names used in the biblical text to refer to the city of Jerusalem.

Right now the only way to determine which Bethany is which is to have a human read the text, decide, and annotate it: we can't do this automatically with sufficient accuracy. That's an expensive addition to the other book processing we do, and we don't usually want to add that cost for resources we don't control. When we create resources in-house (Atlas maps, the earlier Biblical Places Maps, and various media) we typically add this information so a place-specific search like "<Place Bethany (Beyond the Jordan)>" will work correctly: most non-Faithlife resources don't have this level of annotation, so searching for strings like "Bethany" is the next best option.

The old LOGOS maps sets are indexed, BUT the books that contain maps/atlases are classified as MEDIA and are not indexed.
