Does the Ancient Literature Dataset link to David Instone-Brewer's Traditions of the Rabbis from the Era of the New Testament (https://www.logos.com/product/36846/traditions-of-the-rabbis-from-the-era-of-the-new-testament) or does one need to use the Cited By tool for a given Bible passage (https://www.logos.com/training/logos5/cited-by)?
Brannan, Rick. Ancient Literature Documentation. Bellingham, WA: Faithlife, 2015. has a list of what is covered in this dataset. A search didn't show this resource.
Does the Ancient Literature Dataset link to David Instone-Brewer's Traditions of the Rabbis from the Era of the New Testament
Currently No
Basic search can be find Biblical references: e.g. Leviticus 23
Keep Smiling [:)]
The documentation states "Ancient Literature uses data type references. These are like Bible references for non-Bible sorts of things."
Are the Hebrew source texts and English translations in David Instone-Brewer's "Traditions of the Rabbis from the Era of the New Testament" tagged with data type references? If so, the Ancient Literature dataset should automatically link in if Instone-Brewer's resource is prioritized.
The Instone-Brewer's resource is not part of the materials indexed for the dataset. However, if it contains a document which is in an indexed resource then that document will be available linked based upon your prioritization of resources containing that document. Your prioritization could make that Instone-Brewer.
As MJ said, the dataset isn't simply links to particular editions of source resources. We use data type references which link to scheme (like a Bible reference opening any Bible) instead of resource.
Instone-Brewer's work does go into the mix that provides the resultant links for Judaica material (as do several other resources). If it isn't listed in the documentation resource, it should be (I'll look into that). So searching the dataset for an NT reference may provide a link to the Judaica material that has been influenced by Instone-Brewer's work. Whether Instone-Brewer is the resource you see that material in is dependent upon whether or not Instone-Brewer indexes by that scheme, is indexed to that reference, and your scheme (resource) priorities.
So searching the dataset for an NT reference may provide a link to the Judaica material that has been influenced by Instone-Brewer's work.
Any example(s) ? Basic search found two footnotes for Instone-Brewer in NT commentaries, but Passage Guides for those NT passages do not have links to Instone-Brewer under Judaica in Ancient Literature
For Matthew 6:16 found Ancient Literature has Judaica links to Babylonian Talmud and the Mishnah.
Is ancient commentary included in Ancient Literature ? Searching for OT passage finds comments in Instone-Brewer's work:
Ancient Literature has links to two Babylonian Talmuds, Jerusalem Talmud, and the Mishnah.
Also learned Commentaries section of Passage Guide in Logos 7.1 RC 3 cannot find reference in Instone-Brewer for two passages. Currently can use Search or Cited By to find references.
I'm not sure how else to say this, but there will not be direct links to Instone-Brewer's work.
Instead, use of material in his T-R-E-N-T works may, combined with other factors, influence a particular association between an NT passage and some passage in the Judaica corpus (Talmuds, Mishnah, etc.). So for an NT reference, the material that shows up in the "Judaica" section is likely influenced by Instone-Brewer's work.
Whether Instone-Brewer is the resource you see that material in is dependent upon whether or not Instone-Brewer indexes by that scheme, is indexed to that reference, and your scheme (resource) priorities.
Hi Rick,
I guess my question is whether Instone-Brewer "indexes by that scheme". I don't currently have a Mishnah resource in my library, so I can't open the Yoma 8:1 link in Keep Smiling 4 Jesus's Matt. 6:16 ancient literature result example. If I purchased the T-R-E-N-T resources and Yoma 8:1 is translated in there at some point, would the link open Instone-Brewer's resource?
If I purchased the T-R-E-N-T resources and Yoma 8:1 is translated in there at some point, would the link open Instone-Brewer's resource?
Sorry, I just noticed that one of the resources listed as "available for purchase" to open m.Kippurim 8:1 is "Feasts and Sabbaths: Passover and Atonement"...Which is "Traditions of the Rabbis from the Era of the New Testament, vol. 2A: Feasts and Sabbaths". So the answer to my question is yes - The Ancient Literature tool does link to T-R-E-N-T resources.
Thanks!
