Is there any way to do this? We don't use slides and it is a (minor) distraction.

Do you mean the thumbnails of slides on the left hand side of the editor?
If so, then no, there is no way to do this currently.
Yes, turning off the thumbnails would be nice. I simply right click on them to delete.
I agree, it would be good to have this option. But for time being, right click > delete is the only way to do it!
