Comments on Text Comparison Resource Picker

I'm finding that the new picker is confusing

  • Top Bibles would be better placed after Saved and Recent, with separators top and bottom
  • The duplication between Saved and Recent is confusing, but I can't have Saved only as a selection will appear in Recent. Deleting all Saved will leave Recent only, so I'm using that
  • How many resources will appear in Recent?
  • It took some time to realise that clicking in the resource box would activate a selection! An icon/text in addition to Save would prevent the cycle of thinking that Save will do that.

I'm sorry you are finding the new resource picker confusing, I'll pass on your concerns to the team. Can you clarify what you find confusing? You click on a selection and it does alter the display, but it is Save that will save that specific configuration for the future. What for you is the expected behavior?

All the bullet points summarise that.

You click on a selection and it does alter the display, but it is Save that will save that specific configuration for the future.

What do you mean by "click on a selection"? I use "selection" to refer to the ticked boxes under Resources: Clicking Save will save them but not "activate" them (change the TC display). Clicking resources under Saved and Recent doesn't change the TC display - just puts them in Resources:. Closing the picker by clicking outside its box does change the TC display, but I would have preferred an explicit icon under Resources: to indicate that there is an action other than Save.

    Here is another confusion:

    After I click Save:

Where did Greek-Bibles - TR come from?

    After I confirm the Save:

Why are only two resources greyed out?

It took a few repetitions before I focussed on "Resource list name" and realised it had presented a "name" rather than an erroneous list of resources!!

The configuration isn't applied until you leave the popup, yes. This is intentional. It prevents potentially long-running background work (eg, adding a collection or series) from negatively impacting the performance of the popup.

Why are only two resources greyed out?

Whenever your save name is different than the abbreviations of the resources in the set, the list of abbreviations is shown as information. For example, if you start with "ESV, NKJV, NIV" then save that under the name "ESV, NKJV, NIV" then that's all that will show. But if instead you save it under the name "Three Bibles" the software will render that as "Three Bibles  ESV, NKJV, NIV". This is analogous to the way saved reference ranges work in the reference range picker. If you name it with a reference, we just show that; if you change the name, we also show the reference for your information.

What's weird here is that when you saved, you get "Greek Bibles - TR, NA27" which I have to imagine is the name of a collection or of a previous saved configuration that you're editing? Or a custom series name? It came from somewhere. [:)]

Anyway, we preserve the name of the last loaded configuration to pre-populate the save name with on the theory that you may just be modifying the configuration and don't really want to have to re-type the name every time you tweak it and re-save. This may be a faulty assumption; we could just as easily reset the save name to the comma-separated list of abbreviated titles every time.

Understood, but please consider a link in addition to Save as other popups/boxes use an arrow icon to exit.

Your guess is as good as mine as I tried a number of options, including Save when trying to figure out how the configuration of resources is applied!

I couldn't figure out what was happening, so this was not the best assumption and easily lead to duplicates. Replacing comma with say, a hyphen separator would make it clearer that this was a "save name".

I completely agree with Dave on this issue. The text picker is not intuitive and confusing. He hit the points that need to be addressed. Overall, I find the new TC buggy. Switching from verse to interlinear does not always work. There is a requirement to hit enter sometimes when it is not intuitive to do so. In addition, the linking is not working with bible texts. (see Bug post in Logos 7 forum).

    John,

Could you clarify what you've seen? We've got a case about the linking with Bible texts. But in what situations does switching from verse to interlinear not work? It only works for the NT right now. Also could you explain where needing to hit enter is not intuitive?

The maximum number should be 5.

    Philana,

Thanks for your reply. The TC syncing issue is detailed here in the Logos 7 Forum.

I think I finally understand how the TC text selector is working. You click on recent and I expect the blue line to change. As you can see below, I changed the setting to mytag:rinterlinear. The blue line is still the old selection. I now realize that the checked box will be what is now selected. However, there is no enter or place to click except outside the selection popup. i guess this is workable, but not intuitive.

    Here is a screen shot;

As for clicking enter, when I change from verse to interlinear I get mixed results, which sometimes works, and other times will work if I click enter or change the verse entry. I think is should just be automatic once the change in selection is made.

I realize my issue with syncing may be isolated, so that for following up on it.

I agree with Dave and John: The resource picker is confusing -- it is non-intuitive that a selection is activated by clicking outside the picker. I kept looking for an activation button within the picker. I can't think of any other Windows function that is set by essentially escaping from a dialog; usually such action would void any changes, whereas with the picker it accepts the changes. Very odd.
