Beta 2 Installation Issue with Computer Locking Up and Not Resuming Download
Description
Computer locked up while downloading beta 2. It was completely unresponsive and I was left with no choice but to force a reboot. Now rather than resuming the download it is re-indexing everything. About Logos Bible Software box still says application is at beta 1 level.
Repro
- Install Logos 3.0f product I from CD I had sitting on my desk waiting for this point in time. Note did not iniate license sync in Logos 3.0f
- Unlock via web two resources I had been waiting to add to my library until this point
- Manually initiate licesne sync in Logos 3.0f
- Open Logos 4
- Logos Icon appears in system tray indicating updates are being downloaded.
- Open a reading plan to read a resource while waiting for download to occur.
- Click on reading next reading to open the resource at the appropriate destination
- Computer froze
Actual Result
Computer locked up while downloading beta 2. It was completely unresponsive and I was left with no choice but to force a reboot. Because computer was locked up I was unable to access system tray to see point download had reached. Now rather than resuming the download it is re-indexing everything. About Logos Bible Software box still says application is at beta 1.
Expected Result
Download of beta 2 would resume

Description
The re-indexing that started in the above process has now locked up and caused the comptuer to freeze and left me with no alternative but to reboot computer.
Repro
1. After previously desribed lock-up Open logos 4.0
2. Instead of resuming download, re-indexing started.
3. I left application alone and did not access any menu or feature
4. After a while the comptuer froze again and I had to do a restart.
Actual Result
The re-indexing that started in the above process has now locked up and caused the comptuer to freeze and left me with no alternative but to reboot computer.
Expected Result
Download of beta 2 would resume

second set of log files attached after second computer freeze
EDIT NOTE:
On reboot after this second crash I also got the active desktop recovery mode. This did not occur upon first restart after inital freeze.

The only installation issue I noticed, other than indexing time, was it removed my shortcuts from the desktop ans start menu, had to manually pin a shortcut to the taskbar. Other than that seems to be working, will look for issues.
Logos 10 - OpenSuse Tumbleweed, Windows 11, Android 15 & Android 14

second set of log files attached after second computer freeze
EDIT NOTE:
On reboot after this second crash I also got the active desktop recovery mode. This did not occur upon first restart after inital freeze.
This has now locked up my computer multiple times with the re-indexing now starting automatically upon windows start-up. At this point I am logged onto the computer under a different account so it doesn't freeze up on me and I can post back here that I am still having major issues with this upgrade to beta 2.
I have some other things I need to get done on the PC without it continually locking up on me so I am going to work from this other login till I get them done. I can't acess any further log files at this point because they are stored under my documents and this account is not an administrator account and so does not have permission to access that directory.

Hi Andrew,
Can you define a little more precisely what you mean by "locked up" and "froze"? These terms can be used to cover the range of situations from "running extremely sluggishly, Task Manager shows 100% CPU usage, every app takes 30 seconds to respond" (which is bad, but not fatal) to "mouse cursor responds, but Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work (e.g., to lock the system)" to "mouse cursor doesn't even move on screen when I move my mouse" (which is usually indicative of driver or hardware problems).
Thanks,

Thanks,
BradleyCompletely unresponsive, no mouse or keyboard activity, zilch, zero nothing, power swtich was only way to restart. The computer has been running almost like clockwork since the beta begain and i don't know if that has resulted in an overload on the poor old machine but I'm not in a positon to replace it any time soon. The only way I could get the Logos 4 to stop working everytime my computer started was to get it to boot into safe mode and do a system restore to the point before this current beta download started.
I appreciate what Logos is trying to achieve here with all this automated stuff, in the cloud etc but when tthe process is completely out of the users control and they have to resort to do something like this to stop a program then I believe it is clear the software needs a re-think in order to allow a user to halt whatever Logos 4 wants to do and then have the option of kicking it off at a later point. You seriously don't want to be trying to provide support to a user in this situation who is not comfortable with their computer beyond clicking a few menus, who can't get their system stable, and so you can't log in remotely to it, and they can't get Logos 4 to stop whatever it is doing to eliminate that as the potential cause as to whatever may be going on with their computer.
I do also appreciate this is a beta and problems are going to occur so don't have an issue with that but what I would be concerned about is if Logos 4 continues to move foward without some of the control over the process running on a computer is not given back to the user.
Now that it finally appears I have got control back over my machine I am not going to even load Logos 4 at this point I just want to let my machine go through its normal activities for a while and see how it responds.
I hope what I am saying is coming across the right way, I didn't get much sleep last night tyring to sort this out and have woken early this morning, and I am sure there are many tired people at Logos right now. I just think the pendulum has swung way to far the other way at the moment in terms of the user having contorl over their computing experience.

I'm not sure if you read else where but you are not the only one who wants control over the indexer, I have filed a feature request for an update management system which will also control the indexer, hopefully we can get this in before we release. Also I am trying to keep track of the areas that users feel they do not have full control over, feel free to start a new thread specifically dealing with this issue of not enough user control. That would help us a lot and we could even pick some major ones to work on if enough people feel like they can't bear without it. Thanks for all your hard work Andrew. We are also working on creating themes to be less demanding of your computer (graphically seems to be the biggest issue that slows down pc's).

I've put my computer through normal activities today and no sign of the problems that occurred yesterday afternoon after beta2 attempted to download. As a result I have started up logos 4. Again no sign of beta2, application is still at beta1 and no download detected. Instead it has started a re-index. It has been doing this for about an hour now and so far no sign of the issues experienced yesterday. I still have another 4226 resources to index with only about 100 I think indexed so far so this is going far.... Before starting up Logos 4 for another attempt I cleared out the internet cache and have set my timzone to Pacific and also turned sync back on... At this point it looks like I am going to have to wait for it to complete indexing before its going to even look for beta 2 update.. last time this took over 36 hours to index then it looks like I am going to have a very large download of resource updates and resources missed first time (timelines and infographics) followed by a futher round of re-indexing....so maybe I might have beta 2 running and indexed all things going by the end of the week!

Indexing has finished... thankfully didn't do the 36hour plust thing this time but still far too long if this happens everytime you add a resource..... on restart I got preparely libary screen and thought ... oh no here we go again ... but that went away pretty soon ...however no sign of beta 2 download .. I have added to this issue to the thread here on that topic.

Indexing has completed .. thankfully didn't take 36+hour time frame but still too long if one is adding a one of new resource to a library...
On re-start of L4 it came up with Preparing Library Screen again.... thought oh no here we go again..... but that went away fairly soon and no indication re-indexing....
however still no sign of beta 2 and have added that to thread here
