Advice Wanted/Needed

Hey everyone, I am trying to decide between the Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew or Zondervan Biblical Language Lectures accompanied with the basics of Hebrew (3 vol. set) and Greek (3 vol. set).

Any experience or advice is welcomed Smile

A lot more schools are moving from the requirement of original languages and choosing a tool based approach. Trying to figure out which route to go. (I eventually will take a course at my current school for the tools based approach. Though I figured the Learn to Use Course could be helpful.)

This would be just as a self study until I take that course.

If you want to focus on learning the language (instead of training related to Logos features and tools), I'd strongly recommend HB101 Introduction to Biblical Hebrew bundle (which happens to be on sale for Christmas).

This Mobile Ed course not only concentrates on the language and grammar, it provides plenty of opportunities to learn, practice, and read Hebrew within each unit.

There will be a similar GK101 Introduction to Biblical Greek course, coming soon, likely followed by additional courses in the future for those who want to continue their education in Biblical Hebrew and Greek.

Keith, I own the Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew with Logos 6 and find it useful as an introduction to the language tools of Logos Bible Software.

Dr. Michael Heiser while very knowledgeable has a rather "dry" style of presenting the lectures. There are a good deal of walk thru examples to follow (which by the way will require either a second monitor or some other way to view the videos as you follow along in Logos).

Johnny Cisneros on the other hand is somewhat less boring than Dr. Heiser in his delivery.

I find Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew with Logos 6 decent in both content and instruction, but these two tools are not really designed to teach language skills; their aim is to teach how to use the language tools of Logos Bible Software.

That being said, I can say that the product does accomplish what it advertises.

I can't offer any insight on the Zondervan Biblical Language Lectures because I have not used it.

I also have HB101 Bundle. Dr. Futato is an excellent teacher. And just like PetahChristian said, he provides plenty of opportunity to learn, practice, and read Hebrew.

A lot of the seminaries use the Zonservan resources, but I also like Dr. Futato's HB101. Either way they are all great resources.

By the way if you want to preview the Zondervan videos, you can see them in Youtube. Once you do that, you can decide if you want that resource.

Andrew, thank you for your insight. I watched the sample videos online for the zondervan lectures, they seem really solid. I think I'm leaning in that direction as of now.

So it seems that the Zondervan Lectures are a good deal compared to the Zondervan site, which has them for $99 each. Is that correct? Are they the same lectures? The total run times do not seem to add up.

To my understanding they are the same, one works inside of Logos, one works Independant of Logos. The same lectures are also sold on Bill Mounce's Web Site.

Hey everyone, I am trying to decide between the Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew or Zondervan Biblical Language Lectures accompanied with the basics of Hebrew (3 vol. set) and Greek (3 vol. set).

I used Mounce's lectures, text, and workbook to learn Greek. Mounce has all you need to learn basic Greek grammar. I would recommend it. I am currently working through "Going Deeper with New Testament Greek" to take my Greek to the next level.

I have also done the first five chapters of Van Pelt's lectures on Hebrew and found them to be engaging and easy to follow. I've toyed with using Buth's immersion approach for Hebrew (www.biblicallanguagecenter.com/). I would be interested if anyone has used this method with success.

Thankful Hebrew for Reading Comprehension intermixes pointed and unpointed Hebrew text.

Thankful for visual filter highlighting so can "see" range of Greek verbal expression in Greek, English, Spanish, German, Latin, ... At times, verbal expression enhances contextual message.

I had the "Learn to Use" course and sold them. The Zondervan stuff is much more engaging and has more content. It is obviously easier for someone who knows the languages to pick up the software side than vice versa.

I would say that Van Pelt's textbook (Zondervan) for Hebrew is probably too comprehensive for a complete beginner. It mentions too many exceptions and can be burdensome for those who only want the essentials in the beginning phase of their learning.

Futato is better for the complete beginner, and you might want to graduate to Van Pelt after Futato.

You can buy Futato textbook without the videos Keith, just in case you were not aware.
