New Year: How do you Read Your Bible?

We often hear about how important it is to read our Bibles daily, but we less often hear about how to read them. I'm interested to hear how everyone reads their Bibles on a typical morning. If someone was to stand over your shoulder, what would they see? What do you start out doing? When does prayer occur? What questions do you ask yourself? -What do you do specifically, step by step?

I want to hear it all in all it's gory detail!

Thanks for sharing Liam. Wow, that is quite the extensive method. I admire you for taking such a disciplined approach. My approach is much more simple. When I read a section of Scripture I simply ask "Lord, what do you want me to learn from this today? This doesn't replace more extensive and detailed study but is what I try to ask when I read the Bible through each year as part of my daily devotional time.

I still haven't gotten back on track. I began reading Genesis multiple times, with the intent of doing that with each and every book right through Revelation. There's nothing particularly fancy about the approach and there's nothing to add to it.

I'll have to check my calendar to see where I derailed. Thanks for the reminder. All I know is that multiple readings of Genesis has begun to influence every scripture reading and study since I have done it.

It's really the work of the Holy Spirit to use whatever we do.

(Checked: I did 15 reads of Genesis and four of Romans--forgot the latter as it was part of a course prep too)

For devotional reading I follow a loose form of lectio divina - reading and rereading the passage, stopping for thought and prayer as the Spirit moves.
