Bug: Reference Searches are slower in new search engine (Beta 1!)

Reference searches are now optimized in the new search engine"

They are significantly slower "by resource" (New on LHS)

The time improve significantly when repeated, but this had not been necessary with non-reference searches; ("New" is always run first).

Results "by Rank" are also slower (3.8s v. 2.7s for above LN query), considering the restricted presentation of results. This didn't vary for the next set of results (after selecting "Next").

EDIT: just realised this is on Beta 1. Will update for Beta 2!

Please do post screenshots of the new results under Beta 2.

  • Please do post screenshots of the new results under Beta 2.

Verbum 7.3 SR-2 on top (old search engine); Logos 7.4 Beta 2 on bottom (new search engine):

Results from Beta 2 (significantly better) - note that a revised set of preview resources for Logos Now (Jan) was downloaded after the Beta 1 results.

The update increased the number of results from 21724 to 21984.

The update didn't impact the number of results.

Not significantly better. Did you enable the new engine via Set Use New Search Engine to Yes?

Yes in Logos 7.4 Beta 2 and No in Verbum 7.3 SR-2

Thankful for initial search being 1.01 seconds faster, which is 14.6 % faster.

Initial search in Logos 7.4 Beta 4 is slower than Verbum 7.3 SR-2 on Windows 10 along with result counts being different:

Had different layouts open in both applications that included Bibles with visual filter highlighting.

For grins, replicated search count differences with comparable conditions for running one search:

    • Restarted Dell 1737
    • Launched Logos 7.4 Beta 4 to a blank layout
    • Waited for CPU % to be idle (dreaming of notification about busy task in Logos: e.g. collection cache refresh)
    • Opened Search in floating window and entered search string
    • Waited for CPU & to be idle
    • Ran <ln1-21> search using Logos 7.4 Beta 4
    • Search completed in 3.56 seconds
    • Launched Verbum 7.3 SR-2 to a blank layout
    • Waited for CPU % to be idle
    • Opened Search in floating window and entered search string
    • Waited for CPU & to be idle
    • Ran <ln1-21> search using Verbum 7.3 SR-2
    • Search completed in 7.00 seconds

Next opened both applications to the same layout that has three Bibles with visual filter highlighting. Dreaming of notification in application about visual filter highlighting is in progress (had some Not Responding messages appear in title bar while waiting for layout to load). Waited for CPU % in Task Manager to show idle before running search:

Do you get the same results in Logos 7.4 between New Search Engine = Yes and New Search Engine = No?

Do you get the same results in Verbum 7.3 between New Search Engine = Yes and New Search Engine = No?

Which results are the same between Logos and Verbum?

I suspect you have different libraries/indexes on these two installations.

I show no difference between the results for "set use new search engine to off/on", except for a small speed improvement (measured with warm disk cache).

Dave's questions (above) are good ones to answer.

Verbum 7.3 SR-3 has different search results:

Waiting for Logos 7.4 Beta 4 reindex to complete.

Found Verbum 7.3 SR-2 ResourceManager folder had four more files than Logos 7.4 Beta 4 so used command to delete unlicensed resources plus rebuild index in Logos 7.

That is my finding, but the "yes" results were fewer than the "no" results.

The number of resources from Library is the one that matters.
