Is the passage guide Commentaries section set to "All Commentaries" or is it limited to a specific collection?

After updating to Logos 4b; the Passage Guide doesn't allow me to list more commentaries.

I noticed the same thing.

I switched to Cited By (ran it on a collection) and got the "More" option.

Rick, I see your PG Commentaries section is set to use the collection "Illustrations". That may be limiting the selection of commentaries. Does it work correctly if you set it to use "All Commentaries" as shown here:

It's also probable that it's displaying a saved Passage Guide. You can also try deleting it (the saved values) by selecting Delete This Guide from the menu. This will revert it back to the standard template:

No, but only because today they are all working properly. [edit: spoke too soon - now they are not]

The only one not showing "More" only contains 4 resources in the whole collection. [No, all of my collections labeled "favorite", that have numerous resources are still only showing 5 available but no "More" button]

I do not know what was going on before.

I tried both "My Passage Guide" and "Passage Guide"
today and all are now working correctly.

Yes, I totally deleted the "My Passage Guide" and rebuilt it. no change. Still missing resources in a series of my own collections called "Favorites.".

For some reason 3-4 of my collections still only show 4-6 resources in the new reuilt study guide. One of these collections contains over 500 commentary-like resources. BUT in the "Cited by" - the "More" appears. And in the "regular" Passage Guide's "all commentaries" the "More'
also appears.

So (after totally re-creating MPG) mine continue to look like the screen shots posted by our brother which show that the "More" is missing.

What I do NOT understand is why his "More" is missing from "all commentaries" but my "More" is missing from self-made collections?

[Edit: I have already had to delete and replace all of my snapshots, layouts, screen icons etc with this 4.0bRC2 (latest beta release) etc. Do I have to totally "scrub" all previous Passage Guides as well? - i have also had a series of un-explained crashes (which Logos says does not seem to be related to their code -- I do not know if that has any bearing on this].

Did you realize that Cited By is doing a full text search for the passage everywhere it occurs in any kind of book, whereas the PG Commentaries section is only returning links to the single specific section that is tagged for that passage in books of type:commentary ? Cited By would be equivalent the PG Collections section.

Could you post a screenshot of the Collections window showing the collection that has 500 commentaries in it? or at least tell us the collection definition string so that we can reproduce it (i.e., the text in the the field labeled "Start with resources matching:")?

[I am not sure that I am totally grasping this pointc, but:] I am running cited by on the same (selected) collections. When I click on Cited by I have it programmed to display every collection and "mytag" in the system, then I click on particular drawers to search through.

The Passage Guide (& Cited by) is to search/call up John 10:10-18. Even the logos "built in" "Parallel Resource Sets" button has almost 60 hits once any "John" related commentary is displayed in a Panel tab . And when I look at the same "Favorite" collection (in the Parallel Resource Sets icon) it shows somewhere between 30-50 resources.

Therefore, there should be a "More" and tit should probably appear for a few 'more" times!

Have you tagged a lot of your resources? because many of those words that you've used do not add anything to the collection:

"bst" doesn't match anything in my library ( and I have bible speaks today)

same with "Bakernt" (and I have the Baker NT Commentary)
and "bakerexeg" (I have the BECNT)

That string also adds many non-commentaries resources to the collection (which wouldn't show in the PG Commentaries, but they would in the Cited By). I get dictionaries, bibles, monographs, and ancient manuscripts in the collection, in addition to the commentaries. Try adding type:commentary to the beginning of the definition and see how many are left in the collection.

I don't have the extensive library you do (no NICOT/NICNT, for example), but when I use that definition in a Collection, and use that collection in the PG, I also get just 4 commentaries in the my PG. But that's because there are just four matching commentaries in the resulting collection.

Let me ask this from an entirely differing direction.

If I focus in on one custom made collection of commentaries.

I then create a new My Passage Guide, and select for it 1 "Collections" and 1 "Commentaries".

I then add to each of the above the very same custom collection of commentaries.

There will then be differing results showing in the Collection Section versus the Commentary Section.

Why?

- they are searching the same scriptures from the same resources. The only apparent difference is the "section" from which they are doing the search.

The Commentary section is finding commentaries that have a section dedicated to the passage in question. It is limited to resources of type:commentary that are indexed for the passage in question. It returns one link for each matching commentary.

The Collection section is doing a bible reference search on every book in the collection (commentary or not), and returns a link for each and every time that passage is mentioned in the resource. It's the same thing that the Cited By window does, and it's the same thing as searching for a bible reference using a Basic Search in the search window.

That's very interesting. I can replicate that (see screenshot). But pressing F5 on the passage guide cleared the problem up (click in white space somewhere on the PG, then press F5 to refresh).

Mark,my Passage Guide Commentary section looks much like yours.

Is it just a coincidence that even though I have told this section to illustrate a collection called "_Favorites", that it is listing the first 6 of my Library's Prioritized commentaries that deal with John? They appear here exactly as they do in that prioritize list. It is as if I was back using Logos own commentary listing. I don't mind these five.

[I love the Gospel of John and have purchased a lot of Commentaries on it --probably the most of any Bible Book - about 15.]That is why I believe that there should be more (ie. "More").

Todd Phillips has helped me to understand the differing definitions between what a Collection and a Commentary should be displaying. I have no issue with that. (thank you, Todd!).

Yet as my (newly created) "_Favorite" Collection now has EVERY commentary series included in it, I just do not understand why there would be only 6 hits would show up if i place it into one of the "Commentary" sections. I have more than six "John" commentaries. I first tried just John 10:11, then John 10:11-14. But it did not make too much difference. ["Jesus as I AM the Good Shepherd.']

I agree with what Todd says, yet now that I have re-built the Collection it seems like like some of those other commentary series volumes ought to also be there

OR that there should be a "More" button to indicate EVEN the possibility.

If I did not know that they were all in the collection I would not have known enough to go looking for them.

You're not misunderstanding anything. There should be a "more" button in your case. As I said, I got the "more" button to show up by clicking in white-space somewhere in the Passage Guide and then pressing F5. This refreshes the guide, and in my case brought back all my commentaries. Can you try it and report back?

Sorry, Mark, I had meant to report on that. It "refreshes" but the "More" does not appear.

I"m now going to experiment by limiting the search to the entire chapter of John 10 to see if that changes anything. [no, the same 6 still come up].Of all of my experiments I really thought that one should work. These are all commentary's. John 10 is about the Good Shepherd.They ALL deal with it.

I'll F5 this as well: [No , no change]

Strangely, [to really add to my confusion] I have a "one-Volume" collection of one volume commentaries & handbooks which can be searched by chapter and verse. When it is put into a "Commentary" section I do get the "more" button to show. There are probably about 20 resources in that collection.

Here's something to try - just as an experiment.

Turn on logging.
Load Logos.
Open up your collections, and rename a troublesome collection to something like "Test Collection".
Open up Passage Guide from the Guide menu.
Change the commentary collection to "Test Collection".
If it doesn't work, click on whitespace and press F5.
If it still doesn't work. close the PG, then re-open it from the Guide menu.
If it still doesn't work, click on whitespace and press F5.

Then upload your logs.

You might want to try this and learn something new about your commentaries:

open a commentary (or one of the set) that is missing
type Jn 10:6 (or similar) into its text box
if it doesn't have a text box for passages that is one thing you have learnt!

I did try something similar by setting the MPG to just John 10 (hoping / assuming ) that "all" commentaries would have an entry on Jesus comment "I am the Good Shepherd" etc. But that did not work either.

Sorry, Mark, no it's just the opposite.

the "_Favorite" collection in question is now a recent re-creation. The older ones all work fine.

Todd had suggested removing some of the many "mytag" type references to make sure things were being properly "seen/searched" for. So I created individual "series-based" collections and then dragged/dropped them into the "add" window etc. So the "Search for" box is now basically empty.

But no change--still no "More"

I even tried re-naming it to Collection_Favorites but that did nothing.

It really puzzles me as about 15 resources should show up - which should mean that "More" might be expected to appear twice.

ANYWAYS I have tried rebuilding it -- I have tried renaming it -- I may as just as well delete it. I do have a few other jobs that I should be about.
