More visual adjustments for the visually impaired

Thanks for the stuff I CAN tweak now. However, in table of contents listings, for Greek and Hebrew, they need to have the option to be enlarged with a slider (content and table of content has different visual needs). I need to figure out what word I want to study by choice not guessing. Please fix. Thanks. Andrew

Windows doesn't allow you to change the size of the table of contents, except by changing the program scaling. Window's WPF handles this kind of scaling much better than Apple's UI toolkit, which has no support for it, which is why the program scaling on Mac doesn't do much right now. We will come up with something eventually, but we haven't spent much time thinking about solutions for that problem.

As a temporary work around, could you use the "Control+Scrolling" to zoom in on a portion of the table of contents for the resources which you need a larger font? I realize that's not terribly convenient, but you wouldn't have to guess.

-- Am surprised to hear that. I have found many Mac Apps which allow me to adjust font size of a list that acts as sort of table of contents. And over the past 20 years as a beta tester when I suggested it, the dev could handle that. And am sure you could find help from Apple on that too. Not everyone has good 20/20 vision and that will be even more so as your installed base ages or has aged in the last 5 years. Handling font sizes should be doable now.

-- well, that sorta works. If the font is hinted right* and its the right zoom percent, I get lucky; but often its blurry and pixely. And for languages like Greek and Hebrew smooth scaling is very important. When Apple goes full resolution independence, which I bet will be soon i.e. Gui scaling for all devices, can you handle that ??

*I design and evaluate type. A poorly hinted font will not scale well under Truetype. I am assuming you're using well made fonts for Hebrew/Greek which will scale fine in a gui enlargement.

Keep up the improvements, thanks for the Mac version.

That's a bit harsh don't you think? On a program of this magnitude the Logos UI team have many, many considerations to make with regard to proper UX (User Experience) and UI design and development. They will naturally need to improve things as they progress through development. In this case they seem to have recognized the problem but have chosen to correct the issue at a later date.

Many things come into play to define someone as good at what he or she does. I certainly would not make such a judgement or suggest one based on this early alpha build. The idea that it is a simple based on another applications implementation seems logical at first but does not recognize the potential constraints of the current alpha build or the goals set for this stage of the alpha as a whole. Nor does the reality of other seemingly similar implementations designate something as trivial or simplistic to accomplish.

I understand the notion that very little time having been spent on this may be frustrating. That doesn't mean that the problem has not been thought of at all, or that it won't be properly addressed in the future. This is an alpha after all.

The Logos team need and value our feedback, we should strive to work with them during this public alpha. Caustic responses relating to their individual abilities are simply not helpful.

Thanks for your helping me understand better. If I was a bit harsh, its only because often things needed for the disabled are ignored or only given half-baked solutions. If I don't speak up now and firmly, it might be too late in the Beta for real change. Logos in 96 gave me a way to study the bible better then hard to read books, and handling heavy ones too. I am grateful for that. I am only making sure the ease of use I had still remains for me. :-)

Something to think about. Some of the important scholars, sages, and rabbis in the past were disabled from what I had been told and read about, but other fellow sages, scholars and rabbis tried -- rarely -- to help make it work for them. A book to read: Judaism and Disability by Abrams. A ground breaking work on many levels.

If L4 mac becomes what I hope it will, I will be able to finally return to some longstanding research I had put off some 25 years ago. I just hope politics and money don't get in the way of nurturing L4 Mac.

I hope that Logos will make the L4 Mac build as accessible as possible, and that the software will meet your needs and those of anyone else that may be visually impaired. Even with clear eye sight eye strain is an issue for us all. Particularly when we are spending hours and hours a day in front of a computer screen. The ability to adjust L4 Mac to ease this strain will benefit the whole community. I applaud you for bringing these issues up during the alpha.

On a side note I believe that the apostle Paul was visually impaired during his ministry (not to mention his blindness earlier in his life Acts 9:1-9). I'm sure that reading small delicate scrolls was a challenge for him during those years. In Galatians 4:15 Paul speaks of the Galatians willingness to give him their eyes if they could. It's a strong reference, and it would make since that Paul may have struggled with his vision when thinking on this passage of scripture.

Hi Andrew,

As a person with my own set of visual impairments, I share the concerns. That is one reason I helped Beta Test the Windwos version and why I participate as an Alpha tester in the Mac. I try to give feedback to make this program as accessible as possible. I have seen a good response from the developers and I expect no less on the Mac side. I am sure they appreciate the feedback and input.

Thanks to all for agreeing and sharing in my concerns.

Some things to consider:

1. Monitor resolution, many disabled are still using low values, like 1024, or 1280

2. Font kind/size choice everywhere

3. Keyboard shortcuts as well as mouse mirroring each other

4. Icon size and colors

5. Color contrast (the shaper the better)

6. Keyboard navigation around the gui (which in turn can be voice driven)

7. Text size in dialog windows giving info about errors or serial numbers etc..

8. Be careful where/how you would "hardwire" a gui feature

One of Hellen Keller's prized books was her braille bible. :-) On a personal note, one of the best moments during my grueling college years was when my Religious Studies Advisor and teacher told me after I declared my major was, "So, What can I do to help you succeed?". No one ever told that before. Over the many years, no has enjoyed, empowered, and enhanced my mind as he. Grateful he made the effort to look through my limitations.
