Problem Parsing Parallel's

I seem to be missing parallel resources selections for collections. I have created a couple of collections with various subsets of my commentary collections. I have the show in parallel resource check box checked, but these collections do not show up in the parallel resource drop-down when I am in a commentary.

Did I set something somewhere or is my system broken? If broken, how do I fix it?

Symptoms:

I have a collection of Commentaries called "Commentaries - All", it has one rule - type:Commentary. It shows up in the parallel dropdown when I am in a commentary.

I have a collection called "Not rated highly". It has one rule "rating:(<4)". It does not have the "Show in parallel resources" check box checked.

I have another collection called "Commentaries- Favourite" which includes "All commentaries" and excludes "Not Rated Highly". It has the "Show in parallel resources" checkbox checked. This collections shows in the dropdown when I am in a commentary. HOWEVER, resources which should show up in this drop down, do not. For example, If I am in a commentary on Luke , the commentary by OWEN on LUKE, which is part of my favourite commentary collection (i.e.it shows up when I am in the collection editor), does not show up as part of this dropdown.

To further test this, I created a collection called "Commentaries - Owen" with the rule "type:Commentary AND author:Owen" and the "Show in parallel resources" check-box checked . If I am in a commentary which is open to LUKE and I click on the parallel resources drop down, this commentary set is not offered as one of the parallel resource sets. I am only offered "Commentaries - All", "Commentaries - Favourite" and "All parallel Resources"

I repeated this test with a collection called "Commentaries - MacArthur" and it does not show up in the parallel resources dropdown as well.

Parallel resources sets will only show if the current resource is in the set. So if you're in a favourite commentary, you favourite commentaries will appear. But if you're in a non-favourite commentary, the won't.

(This means author-specific collections are unsuitable for parallel resource sets.)

I'm not sure I totally understand your response, but:

For each of the tests, I made sure that the current resource should be in the set. For example.

My current commentary is New Bible Commentary

The passage in the reference box is Ephesians 1:1-19

The MacArthur commentary on Ephesians appears in the:

"Commentaries - All" drop down
"Commentaries - Favourites" drop down
"All parallel resources" drop down

However, these are the only 3 collections offered in the drop downs. The Collection "Commentaries - MacArthur" which contains this commentary as part its resource set, and has its "show in parallel" check box checked does not.

It seems that this collection (Commentaries - MacArthur) should be offered as one of the sets to choose from. It seems that as soon as I put any condition in the rule other than type:, the collection drops out of the parallel resource set being offered.

Sorry I wasn't clear. To use your example, when I say that the current resource must be in the set, I mean that the New Bible Commentary must be in every set that will appear in the Parallel Resource Set menu. As NBC is not in the MacArthur set, the MacArthur set does not appear in the list.

If you think about it, if the McArthur set was to appear in the list, the only entry in it would be MacArthur on Ephesians, which would make it a fairly pointless 'set'.

Yes, it clears it up for me. Thanks! I just added the NBC to my test set and now, the test set is showing up with the 2 resources.

Now back to my original observation which was the source of the posting.

Why are the two new John Owen commentaries (Luke and Matthew) not showing up in my parallel drop down of "favourite resources" when I am in either Matthew or Luke and the current commentary is NBC? All three of these commentaries are in my "Favourites collection (along with some others).

To test this, I used my new found knowledge and I created a collection with 3 commentaries, NBC, MacArthur: Matthew, Owen:Matthew.

I set the reference to a verse in Matthew, the collection shows 3 resources, but the parallel drop down just has the NBC and MacArthur choices, not the Owens one.

What is interesting is that the favourites collection and the test collection are showing up as a parallel set when I am in the Owen Matthew commentary, it just isn't listed in any of the groups (all parallel, favourites, all commentaries, or test)

I am thinking there is something wrong with my index or with these two new commentaries.

I'm afraid I don't have that resource to check, it could be a problem with the resource. Does that resource show up in passage guide OK?

I don't have the Owen commentaries, but it might be how they are laid out. You might go into one of the Owen commentaries and use the Reference Box to move to a selection. Note what the reference box says after you hit Enter. Then copy that exact reference back to your NBC and see if the parallel resource tool works.

I think it has to be something in the way Logos coded these two resources. The type shows up as commentary in the Library tool and the indexing is similar to other commentaries.

I imagine Logos applied whatever verse formatting there was in the original. Some of the older commentaries seem to take material in blocks where modern commentaries go verse by verse. Parallel resources couldn't find the reference you were using in Owen and you'll probably run into this with that resource again. I don't know if Logos will want to recode the resource to go more verse-by-verse if that is what the problem is. One can ask.

This could indicate a problem with the resource. If was you I'd start a new thread with a clear heading like "Bug: John J. Owen Commentaries don't always show in Passage Guide and Parallel Resources". Give some examples, or even better screenshots of what's wrong, and I'm sure others with that resource could help you. People glancing at this thread will probably assume that everything's OK as the problem as originally described has been fixed/explained.

This same problem exists in the Daily Study Bible Series (Barclay). None of those resources are recognized by the Parallel Resources feature either. Hopefully, Logos will correct this situation.

OOPs spoke too soon, Daily Study Bible now works. Perhaps it was another resource.

Logos are making mistakes with resource metadata, whether established resources or new ones. They can be corrected quickly via Sync once notified of the issue!
