How convenient do you find Labels?

I am asking because, simply put, I don't. Sure, they have a lot of functionality. But what I would really like to do is to be able to tag text on the fly rather than have to prepare a label palette and pick from several options every time. In essence, I would prefer to do what clippings allows us to do but within rather than outside of the resource itself. Ideally, I would love to see a tag option from the context menu which we could apply to any object that can be selected. The user could then either enter a new tag or use a preexisting one from a searchable list (which I would prefer to a populating list with their delays). Of course, the purpose of tagging would be to be able to retrieve the tagged texts through searches and/or filters. Wonderland would if "tags" could become one of the indices the Concordance Tool queries.
So I guess I am throwing the question out there. I am sure there are labels fans. I am not saying that labels should be eliminated. I am just wondering if there are others like me who don't find them that convenient to use but would actually have much use for a simpler yet effective tagging system.

I gave them a go but lke you found them to cumbersome to work with so stopped. I don't want to have to create palletes for labels, too many pallets cogs up the dropdown list of when highlighting and the response time when trying to apply a highlight becomes slow if you have too many pallets.
i like the concept, I don't like the implementation in practice.

This would make it somewhat more convenient if all I ever needed was 36 labels (the 26 letters and 10 numbers available as shortcuts). But even so, one has to either remember the shortcuts or have the highlighting window open to refer to it (and then what is the point of having shortcuts?).
I would rather be able to have an unlimited number of tagging possibilities, including being able to easily apply as many tags as desired to one selection, just as we can for annotations, resources, clippings, etc.
Nevertheless your screenshot illustrates well how this Frenchman feels: Labels are "bof".

Apart from the convenience, you could have one label Theme with attribute Name, where you would have a prompt to enter a value (Christ, Culture, etc) after applying the highlight. A search would look like {Label Theme WHERE Name = Culture}. You can apply multiple labels to one selection.
Otherwise have you considered Community Tags?

Me too.
Morris Proctor is big proponent of the power of right-clicking as an acolyte of his training, so am I. Francis, I love how you advocate for simplicity and wider comprehensibility of the more powerful features of Logos, such as searching and tagging. Big Props!
I hope this thread gets the attention it deserves. And more MVP comments and suggestions. Maybe even FL can stop on by!

If I tag my whole Bible with Labels this would real slow Logos dit'nt it?
Beside I double tag with Logos or I just tag where Logos don't tag or wrong tagged (see Scan this is not a Chariot it's a Wagoon)
So have it in the right Click Menue would solve two Problems. First I see where Logos allready has a tag for, and I could ad my tag to it.

Dave:
This sounds cool. I need to give it a try.
Thanks in advance!

I suggested Community Tags which would satisfy Francis' request (they are an option on the LHS of the Context menu when you choose Selection on the RHS).

My comment had a two-fold purpose. First, to encourage a wider discussion of Francis's question aimed at increasing understanding and use of this powerful and useful feature. Second, to amplify Francis's observation that having the Label Entry feature accessible from the Context menu would be a desirable improvement. I of course value greatly your input and am aware that Community Tags are accessible from the Context menu.

Community Tags are accessible from the Context menu.
But Community tags have a preset range of values - you cannot create new data with them as you can with labels.

Hence my interest in getting the Label Entry feature on to the Context menu.

I don't see community tags as the solution indeed.
It should also be kept in mind that some Logos users are academics who are working on pre-publication projects: they may not want their project-related tags to be shared with everyone.

Yes,
And I want to see others acknowledge this esp. MVPs and FL, building a groundswell of support resulting into adding Label Entry feature to the Context Menu.

>>"How convenient do you find Labels?"<<
Well, when I was growing up, I learned it was illegal to remove them from my mattress.
Eating a steady diet of government cheese, and living in a van down by the river.

My reservation is that the tags are shared.

The best way to achieve this is to put a suggestion into User Voice.

Would you support this effort? Why or why not?

My vote does not carry any more weight than yours, and you need a few hundred votes to convince FL that it has enough support.
This is what I consider:
- do you want to define a label via the Context menu - NOT A GOOD IDEA; otherwise
- would it save you selecting text - NO
- would it save you selecting a highlighting style - YES, but
- would it save you selecting a label - NO; and
- would it place additional load on the Context menu - MAYBE (depends on when the list of labels is generated)
Selecting a label via the Context menu would be more functional/pure than selecting a highlighting style via the Highlighting tool, but it will still appear as a highlight.
So it is likely that I will support the suggestion provided it only works with pre-defined labels.

I have acted on your leading and used my last vote to start a idea in UserVoice it is found here I ask for your support. https://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-7/suggestions/18225697-add-label-entry-feature-to-the-context-menu

I agree. This is why I proposed simple tagging instead.

But if Labels via the context menu is not really a practical solution to our problem, why campaign to have the idea supported?

Are you misreading the proposal in light of my "NOT A GOOD IDEA" comment?
