Technical Bugs are A Huge Time Waster

As a very busy minister, I am getting more and more put out with Logos 4. I love the software, when it works.

A few weeks ago, the indexer started to crash after and update, so I had to figure out how to fix that - wasted time.

Yesterday, a new update caused my indexer to crash again - and now I cannot fix it, just have to wait for a new service pack release - more wasted time.

I need software that works 100% of the time. I have NO time to waste on trying to fix Logos. I need to study, not fix my study tools.

There, now I have wasted five more minutes venting and I actually feel better.

I know most of the reasons why people still may have version 3 on their computers is because of missing features to come next quarter, but, for reasons like you, Gordon, are experiencing is another reason why I have version 3 still installed. It's my backup and I don't want to have to use it.

I feel your pain, having just posted regarding "hyperlinking" . . .

Without sounding arrogant, I've been using Logos from its beginning, and while the product has wonderfully matured, they never dropped the ball so badly with leaving out those features "power users" go for, e.g., hyperlinking to articles, external PDFs, etc. Thus, over the many years, as with your "old" Bible, it's literally full of good notes, links, to articles, papers, etc.

As a long time user, I jumped on the L4 wagon instantly! Even "upgraded"! I went to the first L4 workshop with Morris Proctor . . . and must confess, I've been progressively disappointed with L4's "lack" . . . Please don't hear me knocking Logos. I research and write everyday, it's my life and livelihood. I won't quit using Logos software, but, I may have to drop L4 and come back in 6 months or a year when it, hopefully, will have the features of its heritage, L3.

As noted, I suspect the developers may have underestimated the number of people seriously using this software, seriously using it for years, accumulating and building a reservoir of tools (and links) . . . maybe L4 will be there on the "sooner" side . . . I'm already looking forward to its speed. But, in the meantime, back at the ranch, it looks like it's L3 for awhile longer . . .<SNIP>

I have spent hours over several weeks working on these "issues" and, as noted, need to be back to work with stable software . . . now, I too have vented, Jerry

I really, really like Logos 4, except when it does not work right (and that is the case today- it does not return search results after I allowed it to install an update and the indexer broke). As a last ditch effort, I deleted and uninstalled everything and am reinstalling Logos 4 from scratch. If I get it to work, I will never allow it to update again on a busy day.

In the meantime, I borrowed some paper commentaries and dusted off a few of my own paper books to prepare for tonight's Bible study. It feels nostalgic, really.

Not to add to your workload, and I agree with you about needing Logos just to work and not be fixed, but do you have Logos 3 loaded on your computer? It would be a good backup and would rarely give you trouble, even though you won't have everything set up the same as in Logos 4. Just a thought.

Gordon, I'm not aware of that issue and why it cannot be fixed today. But I recommend for users with frequent purchases to manage the download and indexing with Automatically Download Updates = NO in Program Settings. It will notify you about a download but you can defer it until you are ready.

Thanks for the tip. My issue was something caused by a non-US version of Windows (I use a Russian-language version) which does not work well with the updater script. Logos development said would be corrected with 4.0b SR1. Not sure what caused it, but it only hit with the last two updates. I dumped everything and reinstalled and it indexed and now works fine, but it took several hours to do.

I have securely set the Auto Updates to NO.
