How inclusive is Bible Sense Lexicon

When I do a Bible Search (NIV) for <Sense fear> I get 132 results in 117 verses, while only the word 'fear' returns 341 results in 330 verses.

It seems that the Sense Lexicon isn't very inclusive, is it?

For example the following results are not included in the <Sense fear> search, while I guess they should:

- Gen. 32:7

- Ex. 9:20

- Lam. 3:57

- Ezek. 11:8

And many others that are not mentioned.

I wonder what's the worth of such a Sense Lexicon if it's not at least to some extent exhaustive.

Any comments?

Hi Michael,

If you open the Bible Sense Lexicon and enter "fear" in the search box you will see all the different nuances that are used to determine the different senses.

If you go to each of those passages, open the information pane, under word info you can see the sense used.

If you right click on the word fear at ex 9.20 and select the lemma and run a Bible Word Study and open the Senses section you can see how and where that particular Hebrew word is categorized.

Since the senses are determined by humans, you may not agree with them regarding a particular verse, but the Senses tool is quite complete and a good alternate study from a simple concordance search for the word fear.

Search for <Sense Fear> includes consternation, dread, horror, terror (feeling) while not having a number of other senses:

- Gen. 32:7

- Ex. 9:20

- Lam. 3:57

- Ezek. 11:8

Using OR in searches has different highlighting of senses:

<Sense fear> OR <Sense to fear (dread)> OR <Sense reverencing one ⇔ fearing one>

That's all very helpful and indeed Ex. 9:20 seems to be a very good example of how one could dispute the sense tagging of feared.

I see that Gen. 32:7 is not included in the <Sense fear> search, because it is tagged <Sense dread>. However, I would expect that the overarching sense 'fear' would include the sub-senses 'dread', 'consternation', 'horror' and 'terror' in its search results. Of course, you showed a workaround, but it should be possible to do it more straightaway.

It would be nice if there will be an option to include subsenses in your sense search.

It seems indeed that it includes at least something more, but not necessarily the subsenses, since <Sense fear> still doesn't include Gen. 32:7, which has a subsense of fear.
