To hide or not to hide?

I was surprised to read just now in the Logos Blog that "hiding large numbers of resources can negatively affect start-up time." Yikes! What is a "large number," and how negative is the effect?

So the only real reason to hide resources is to free up hard disk space? (And not have them show up in the Library, search results, etc.?)

I don't know but I do know there is a check made for hidden resources on startup.

Checking my logfile I find I have 334 hidden resources and it takes less than one fifth of a second to check them all. And other things are going on at the same time.

So - assuming this is what is being referred to I think you would need to have a lot of resources hidden for this to have a significant impact.

A reason I hide some resources is that I don't want them to clutter my library. This applies to (1) resources that were part of a collection I acquired that contained resources I wanted along with others I don't care for and (2) resources that were available for free and that I downloaded to improve dynamic pricing on collections that feature it, although I don't particularly care for the resource itself. The clutter that results is at two levels: first, in the library. When filtering the library, it is annoying to find resources you don't care about and it makes for more stuff to look through. Second, the same applies in searches. You can get more false positives and again, you have more stuff to look through when you have many useless resources in the library.

I have acquired a large number of Latin resources through the free Perseus collection, but I do not use Latin at this point. So again, to limit false positive and unclutter my library, I hid most of these.
