Visual Filter Based on Proverbs Explorer?

I was wondering whether anyone would know how to begin to use the theme categories from the Proverbs Interactive to begin to create a visual filter.

As a worked example, how might I create a visual filter that red underlines all proverbs that deal with 'evil'?

I don't believe you can do this directly by using capabilities of the Proverbs Interactive. If you look in the Interactive you will see that "Evil" is tagged as a theme and the only fields we can currently search on are "Type" and "Form".

You might want to look at the Preaching Theme "Evil" - if those give you the sort of results you are looking for you could create a Visual Filter from that

1. Apply your criteria in Proverbs Explorer so as to obtain only the result verses in the main area of the window.

2. Select all the verses and copy (in Windows, after clicking inside the area CTL-A to select all, CTL-C to copy).

3. Create a new Passage List (under Documents). Click Add, select "from Clipboard". Name your list and close it.

The new passage list will appear as a visual filter you can toggle on or off in the visual filters list of your Bibles resource windows.

If you have the Proverbs Explorer Interactive, then you should also have the Proverbs Explorer dataset that matches the data in the interactive.

This means you can do a label search as a visual filter. Note that label searches, however, may take a long time and you may cause some delay in application performance, particularly if the visual filter is always on. Your search would look like this:

{Section <PreachingTheme = Evil>} INTERSECTS {Label Proverb}

You can (see my post above) use a combination of Section and Label searching to get the desired result.

Yes, the Themes in the interactive are drawn from the Preaching Themes dataset (and "People" is taken from the Person/Agent analysis). Since they are drawn from that dataset, it didn't make sense to duplicate them in the Proverbs Explorer dataset data as an INTERSECTS search provides the same results.

Dataset items such as this typically include the information unique to the dataset and assume that items from multiple datasets can be combined using a search command like INTERSECTS.

What I prefer about the method I suggested is that while it is less technical, it is less complicated especially if one wants to apply more than one criterion. The browser handles it all without possibility of error of syntax as one organises and subordinates arguments in a search string. In both cases, one has to make a passage list in the end anyway.

Thanks for everyone's helpful replies so far. I am starting to get somewhere with this now. Out of interest, is there away to focus the proverbs explorer on a specific range? Eg. Proverbs or Job

Sure

If you click on "All Passages" you will get a dropdown into which you can enter a range - I have chosen Proverbs

Once selected this refines the search as shown below

Hi All,

After much hard-slogging, I thought I would share the fruits of my labours: Wisdom Theme Visual Filter & Highlighting Palate for Proverbs, based on Logos Preaching Themes Dataset.

The filter adds a left or right margin highlight based on the various criteria. I purposely chose the margins because I am in love with the Logos Morphology visual filters and so wanted to keep the text itself clean of mark-up. It also means that (in theory) it shouldn’t class with any text-based visual filters or highlights.

Left margins are the meta-themes of Proverbs:

- Wisdom and Knowledge

- Folly, Sin, & Evil

- Righteousness & Justice

- The Fear of Yahweh

Right hand margin deals with sub-themes:

- Interpersonal Relationships (e.g. Friends, family, neighbours, etc.)

- PERMS Health (Physical, Emotional, Relational, Mental, Spiritual)

- Sex and Sexuality

- Speech

- Wealth and Poverty

I chose these categories based on what I saw as common groups of sub-themes in Proverbs considering the preaching theme dataset, but of course, it is so utterly subjective that I don’t in anyway consider my categories ‘authoritative’.

The very nature of the visual filter and the underlying dataset mean that this is very much a blunt force instrument, thus you’ll no doubt come across a few false-positives, but hay ho. You also won't be surprised to see massive overlaps in places, this is partly, again, due to the tagging of the verses, but also, due to the nature of proverbs.

I put the filter together a way to quickly find relevant proverbs for pastoral & teaching work ‘at a glance’ without having to do complex searches, and also to see thematic structure within a section. However, with the hope that there might be someone other than myself who may also find this helpful, I have posted the relevant links below:
