Sorting by Title

Question - why when I sort by title, both ascending and descending start  with numerical titles?  I would think that the order would be reversed.

    Rosie:

I saw and read a response from you - now it has disappeared.  Did you withdraw it?

If you mean the L4 Library Title then it sorts as expected for me.

Yes, I deleted it because I realized I had misread your question. I thought you were saying it was strange that sorting in alphabetical order put the numeric titles at the beginning rather than that the end, and I went into a whole explanation of how alphanumeric order works and why the numbers come first. Then I realized you know that and I tried what you actually said and indeed was able to reproduce that problem and agree that it's strange.

Then I stopped being able to reproduce it (as Dave wasn't) and was puzzled. But I figured out why:

Dave please confirm this on your Library: The problem only happens when you have the entire library displayed. As soon as you do any filtering by something typed in the Find box, the numeric entries which match that filter sort correctly whether you're sorting by Title in reverse alphanumeric order or forward.

I cannot reproduce the problem in my entire library (900 titles) nor a filtered part. This applies to 4.0b and 4.0c!

It is interesting that the numbers are sorted numerically. In L3 1890 Darby Bible occurs before The 365 Day Devotional. In L4 the 365 title occurs before 1000 and 1890 titles.

This is very strange. It's not reproducing for me now either, just minutes later, having changed nothing, downloaded nothing, not even having done anything else in Logos. I had left Logos running with the Library open sorted in reverse order, went down to get something to eat, came back, and the sorting looked correct (I could have sworn it was incorrect when I left my screen). Played around with it some more and can't get it to malfunction again.

    Twilight Zone...

I think I may have the answer - it is an optical illusion.  When a change is requested in the order of the title, the scroll bar follows whatever book is selected.  If a number is selected, the scroll bar jumps to the end of the list and is still showing the numbers - but at the bottom of the list rather than the top.

To see this move choose the last item in the list - in mine it is "Zion ...".  Then when I reverse the sort order, it jumps to the top of the list.  Reverse the sort order again, it jumps to the end.  When this is numbers, it appears that numbers are at the top of the list, but it is the cursor that has moved.  The numbers are sorted in the right order.

    LOL [;)]

I can't explain why the sort order is different between L3 and L4.

That is it indeed it! Good sleuthing! And that's surely the first time I've heard "it's an optical illusion" as a response to a bug report. "It's by design," or "can't reproduce," or "that will be fixed in the next version," but never this. Good one. [:)]
