Last night I went to use the Logos 4 program for an adult study and when I opened it the program was so busy with its own maintenance functions that it was useless for the class - is there a way to turn off the updating and indexing functions until you have time to let the machine sit off in a corner by itself and update?

Sorry for the inconvenience but the latest big update was 4.0b and that introduced a new feature which creates a separate Bible Index - this is probably what was indexing if you had not already updated to 4.0b. To turn of auto updates go to Tools | Program Settings and check OFF "Automatically download updates"

I have the same problem and it annoys me; it renders the program useless.  I sense a program getting so big and sprawling that it is beginning to fall over...

I really disagree.  I love L4 on my slow machine.  I just realize that I need to turn off updates and indexing till I have overnight to work on it.  No big deal.

Also, if Logos is indexing you can right-click on the icon in the system tray and select "Pause indexing for four hours". But yes, if you are using this as a presentation machine, I would recommend setting "Automatically download updates" to no, but leave "use internet" to yes, then you will be prompted when an update is available.

    Darren,

i have my program set to both Off (automatic updates & Use Internet to No), and when opening the program it still prompts me when updates (for L4 or resources) are available. But i can choose to refuse the update until a more convenient time. FWIW

Steve I can't reproduce this issue of Automatic Updates and Use Internet set to No and receiving the prompt to update the program..

i keep these turned Off to avoid inadvertent updates/indexing, it also allows increased speed for my slower computer (see signature below). i can't reproduce obviously [:)] (until the next update). Could well be that i saw the update on the forum and temporarily turned Auto Update On. i will try to remember to be on the watch next time an update comes out (have prepub due 4/5).

    Thanks

Yesterday I gave the machine the whole day to update and index - it never finished.  Today I started over and at 10:24 it said "indexing 1 hr 3 min remaining"  Now, at 11:39 it says "indexing 5 hrs remaining"  Nothing else is running on this laptop - just Logos 4

welcome to the forum Michael !

You may want to start a new Post since others may not find your question as easily here, since this is kinda unrelated to the title.

Just click on Write a new Post in forum page

That way other who know how to answer your question can more easily see it (i don't know how to answer your question, sorry)

Edit:  don't forget to give it a descriptive title (i.e. Indexing never finishes)

Thanks for the tip - I started a new thread - I was relating back to my opening post on how busy this version of Logos is with self maintenance - I've had the program for over 10 years and still use LDLS 3.0f Scholar's Library with many add ons and it has never been such a task to add items or update - I bought Logos 4 to run on a laptop and use for presentations to adult ed classes, but so far it's not been worth it.

i have the same L3 package and also use a laptop. And also take my laptop to a Thur night Bible study. They have me hook it up to a large screen LCD TV in the house we use which has been fun. Last night we studied Jeremiah and i had pre-setup maps and Biblical people which we were to cover as well as setup links to commentaries which had relevant info. So hopefully when Logos gets further along these updates will become better and farther between. i keep the Automatic Updates turned off just as you probably do. As mentioned above, it still lets me know when an update is available, and i can control when it happens.

Blessings and may our God richly use you!
