Library resources which shouldn't be hidden?

Hi all--

I just signed up for Logos Now and while I thought it would just unlock a number of tools, it also added a lot of resources to my library. I'm a low clutter type, and so I want to hide the ones I won't read, but I don't want to cause any of the Tools to stop working. Are any of the resources required for the various tools (and if so, where can I view these requirements) or can I safely hide anything I'm not interested in?

Welcome to the forums! Depending on what you had before, you may see several kinds of new resources in your library:

Mobile Ed courses
Media and Interactive resources
Lectionaries
Dataset documentation and glossaries
Clause Visualizations
a handful of other resources, including monthly previews

Clause Visualizations are used in Syntax Search, and I wouldn't recommending hiding glossaries or other documentation; but others can be safely hidden without affecting the functionality of any tools.

However, instead of hiding resources, you might consider creating a Collection instead. For example, you could create a Collection with the rule: * (ANDNOT rating:<2)

Then change the filter on the top right of Library from "All Resources" to this collection, to show only the resources rated higher than 2 stars by yourself and Logos community. If you don't want to see a book, do so with a single click by rating it one star; and this method also has the benefit of keeping those resources available and indexed if you decide you need them after all.

Thanks for your reply. I think my searches will be faster if I remove titles from indexing though and I don't like the idea of giving 1 star to resources that are probably very beneficial to others. Hiding works well for me, but I understand your point too. Some people are better at working with large libraries, but I work better with a well-culled and curated one. Thanks!

I just felt I had to chip in and point out the obvious...

One of the huge advantages of working with a large library of books you are not going to read comes from the fact that the authors that you are going to read probably read them and quote from them.

When these quotations come up during a study sometimes due diligence will make you want to ask 'did that chap really say that?' or 'is this author taking this quotation out of context?'. When you come to these points if you have hidden the resource, you will not be able to check questions like these easily.

While you may be happier with a small library but you are better off (research wise) with as big a library as you can muster.

To add on to Mike's comment: You could always add a tag to your special books and then filter your library for that tag. It would appear as if you didn't have the other books.

The speed of searching is primarily determined by the number of resources you're searching in, not the number of resources indexed in your Library. So if you build a collection of your favourite books and search within that, you shouldn't see any slowdown just from having those other books installed and indexed.

Good to know. I'm getting the impression the software and workflows are really designed with the understanding that nothing is hidden, but the hide feature is there for ritual declutterers like me (I still permanently delete Amazon ebooks after I read them if I know I'm not going to read them again). I may try to go with things unhidden, but it's hard to change personalities so easily

So you are (partly) responsible for the demise of the ebook and the rise of printed books (they just get put to the back of the shelf)[:)]

The 'hide' feature was reluctantly implemented in response to a demand that users should be able to remove resources without them being re-downloaded. Libronix (or Logos 3) allowed permanent deletion of resources and selective updating of resources but this made it difficult for Customer Support when users complained about missing resources!

Hiding retains accountability whilst 'unhiding' allows automatic restoration. Note that you have to re-index your library to remove hidden resources from the Index.
